FDIC employee given special recognition by Dana College during Homecoming, Oct. 11

Julie Howland was honored with one of Dana College’s most prestigious alumni awards Oct. 11 in Blair, Neb., when the college bestowed upon her the title of “Outstanding Young Alumna,” at a special ceremony held as part of Homecoming festivities.

Honorees are chosen for their achievements after leaving Dana College and must have graduated in the last 15 years. Howland’s exemplary performance for the FDIC was a major reason cited in her selection for the award.

Americans entrust their money with institutions that are FDIC insured. The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) trusts Howland, a 1991 Dana graduate, with making sure all those Americans can rest assured.

Howland has been in leadership roles since her days at Dana, when she served as president of the Student Senate and a resident assistant. She also worked for three years for the business faculty.

“ They made each student they interacted with feel as if they were their most important priority,” Howland said. “Their compassion to teach people has rubbed off on me.”

Now Howland is the teacher. In her time at the FDIC she has trained and mentored green examiners and even participated in the development of examination systems that will be used by regulatory agencies across the country.

She has been awarded the agency’s Sustained Superior Performance Award for her work as an examiner in charge of a billion-dollar financial institution. For this project she supervised more than 50 examiners from two regulatory agencies. In the same year, she was given the Special Act Award for her dedication and commitment to a project analyzing the credit quality at financial institutions.

Her dedication reaches beyond the workplace. Collecting clothing and toiletries for battered women, riding 25 miles in a bike race for multiple sclerosis and volunteering for the Avon 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk are some of her service activities.

“ I have had many opportunities to teach and mentor others — new examiners — learning the role of supervising institutions to teaching examiners how to use new software packages,” Howland said. “A teacher’s role is to develop a person to the best of his or her abilities. I enjoy observing this transformation of knowledge. I learned the value of this transformation from the business faculty at Dana. They showed a willingness to develop a person to their fullest potential.”

Dana College is a private, liberal arts institution that currently enrolls approximately 600 students. The campus is located on 150 acres overlooking the Missouri River Valley in Blair, Neb. Dana grants bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 liberal arts, business, education and pre-professional programs. Dana is affiliated with the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and its athletic teams compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
