Baseball Split against Doane and Concordia

The Dana College baseball team went 2-2 in a pair of conference games over the weekend.  The Vikings swept a pair of games against Doane College on Saturday afternoon, before dropping a pair against Concordia.

In game one against Doane, Dana capitalized on three Tiger errors and two hits in a 4-1 come-from-behind victory.  Taylor Hoskinson (FR, Omaha, NE) had the big hit in the top of the seventh that drove in two runs.  Andrew James (FR, Omaha, NE) also drove in two runs as he reached base on an error.  Robert Riggs (SO, Council Bluffs, IA) pitched six innings and picked up the win.  He struck-out three batters and gave up one run.  John Ocken (FR, Omaha, NE) pitched a perfect seventh inning to pick up the save.

Dana come from a 2-0 deficit in the top of the fifth inning to claim a 4-3 win in the second game.  The Viking offense erupted for nine hits.  Andrew James, Quentin Connealy (SR, Tekamah, NE), and Drew Petersen (FR, Omaha, NE) each had two hits.  Hoskinson, Austin Lunn (FR, Omaha, NE), and Andy Cookston (FR, Lincoln, NE) each had one hit.  Matt Weeks (JR, Omaha, NE) pitched four and a third inning to pick up the win.  Weeks allowed four hits and gave up two runs.  Anthony Teal (FR, Omaha, NE) pitched an inning and two-thirds of perfect relief.  John Ocken pitched the seventh inning and picked up his second save in as many games.

The Vikings could not keep their great run in conference going as they were swept 10-3 and 4-1 in Seward by Concordia University.  The Viking offense was limited to five hits.  Cody Falk (FR, Arlington, NE) hit a two run home-run in the top of the second inning.  Pete Treantos (FR, Omaha, NE) pitched four and two-thirds innings and suffered the loss.  He allowed six hits and nine runs.  Kyle Courtney (JR, Omaha, NE) pitched the final inning and a third out of the bull pen.  Courtney allowed one run on two hits.

The Vikings continued to slap out hits in the second game, but were unable to come away with a win.  Taylor Hoskinson, Andrew James, Austin Lunn, Andy Cookston, and Drew Petersen had the hits for the Vikings.  Tim Sabadin (SR, Lake Elizabeth, CA) drove in the lone Viking run with a sacrifice.  Anthony Teal suffered the loss in game two.  Teal pitched three innings, allowing five hits and three runs.  Courtney pitched two and a third inning of relief.  He allowed one run on two hits.  Brian Snitily (FR, Prague, NE) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed only one hit.

Coach Misfeldt’s Corner

About Doane:  "On Saturday, we played some outstanding baseball against a very good Doane ball club,” commented Coach Ken Misfeldt.  “We got great pitching from Rob Riggs, Matt Weeks, Anthony Teal and John Ocken -- who picked up two saves on the day. We also had some timely hitting from guys like Quentin Connealy, Drew Petersen Taylor Hoskinson and Andrew James."

About Concordia:  "Sunday against Concordia, we had a terrific opportunity to get into the thick of the league race,” said Misfeldt. “We just couldn't create any offense. The wind was blowing hard from left field to right field, but we simply didn't take advantage of it. We had trouble scoring runs -- three of which came on Cody Falk's home run in the opener -- and that's just not enough runs to win many college ball games."

Overall:  "We're learning each weekend what the college game is all about. Give these guys another year or two and I know you'll see some good things happening in this program."
