Employers can increase their visibility on Dana’s campus in
a variety of ways. To participate in any of these events, contact
Career Services by phone: 402-426-7258, or email career@dana.edu.
We encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities listed
here!
Panels: Panels are a good opportunity to
interact with students. Panel discussions provide an opportunity
for students to hear 3-5
professionals talk about their field. An opportunity for questions
and answers follows the panel discussion. Employers provide welcome
assistance with these events: • Industry, Occupational, or
Job Search Panels
•
Presentations on a variety of topics (Resumes, Cover Letters, Interviewing,
Networking, etc.) • Career Exploration Events
Student Organizations: There are a number of student organizations
affiliated with various majors on campus. Presentations on topics
about industries related to those majors are very helpful.
Business Club
Art Club
Criminal Justice Organization
History Club
Student Education Association
Council for Exception Children
Music Ed. National Conference
Social Justice Organization
Mock Interviews: Students appreciate the chance to develop
their interview skills as they begin their professional job searches.
Mock
Interviews are generally about 30 minutes long including time for
feedback with the students about their strengths and areas of needed
improvement.
Dana Mentors: Dana Mentors are alumni and others who
are interested in helping young people as they begin their careers.
They
can assist in a number of ways including group presentations and
individual conversations with students about their occupations
and/or their industries. For a list of those in occupations particularly
needed, click on http://www.dana.edu/careerservices/volunteers.html
Giveaways: Starving college students are always
interested in free and useful items!! If you would be willing to
contribute
a prize
for a contest, your organization will receive publicity during
the signup period as the donor of the prize. Appropriate items might
be such things as gift certificates, restaurant meal certificates,
electronic items for computers or audio equipment, phone cards,
etc.
Sponsor an Event: Employers can be a corporate
sponsor for career events on campus such as a “Professional
Etiquette Dinner,” Networking
events, Dress for Success, and other events.
Overview of the Internship Program: Offering
an internship is a wonderful way to increase your visibility on campus
among not only the students,
but faculty and administrators as well. Naturally, students
talk to each other and to their faculty advisors about their internship
experiences.
When your organization needs talented students for busier
periods or short-term projects, Career Services helps you connect
with
students on Dana’s campus who are eager to participate
in an internship.
• Internship Sponsors who participate may be profit or nonprofit,
public or private. Sponsors are encouraged to compensate interns
by hourly wage or stipend, but it is not a requirement.
• Students can work part-time during fall, or spring semester
internships. Discovery Term (January) internships are usually
full-time for
three weeks. Summer internships can be either full-time or
part-time. A
minimum of 40 contact hours are required per academic credit,
so an internship for three college credits would involve a
minimum of 120 contact hours.
• The sponsor agrees to provide a relevant and quality work
experience that will facilitate the intern's overall knowledge.
• You may post your internship through our Career Services
web job listing service site ncrc-csm.symplicity.com/employers,
just as you would post a job. You need to be a registered employer
on our job listing site to post a position. Your registration
is free, as is internship and job posting. The registration,
which only takes a few moments, simply provides us with contact
information
so that students may get in touch with you to apply for the
internship or job.
• Benefits to your organization in providing an internship
are:
- Access enthusiastic and productive staff for short-term needs
- Opportunity to observe students’ performance with an eye
toward possible long-term employment following graduation
- Heightened visibility for your organization to both students
and faculty on the Dana College campus
- Possibility to hire a full-time employee who is already familiar
with your organization and may require a shorter training period
- Chance to screen, select, evaluate and recruit potential
employees in your own environment.
- Utilization of permanent staff more effectively.
- Prospect of using linkages between sponsor and education.
• An internship can fit your needs:
- Any time of year (January, spring, summer, fall)
- Any length (3 weeks to a year)
- Full-time (January or summer) or Part-time (any time)
- Paid or Unpaid
- For credit, or without credit
- Any geographic location (January or summer)
