JOB LISTINGS

Timing your application:

  1. Remember, school districts may decide to interview applicants as soon as their application materials are complete so it is a good practice to apply for a position within the week you first see it advertised.  Although the deadline may not be for some weeks, the school district may begin interviews before that deadline and find someone whom they wish to hire early – the early bird gets the worm, so apply within a week of seeing the advertisement.
  2. You should always try to arrange it so that all of your application materials arrive within a few days of each other.  It will make it easier for the school district personnel office to keep everything together.  That means that, if you are having your credential file managed by another party, you should be sure to make arrangements for your credential file to be sent at the same time you send off your other materials.

What to Send:  Be sure to read the application instructions carefully so that you send everything required.  Generally you are responsible to send four things:

  1. A completed application form from that school district (check on their website to see if it should be a form you print out, fill in, and mail in; or a form you type into online and send electronically.
  2. Your professional teaching resume – up-to-date
  3. A cover / application letter
  4. Your credential file (which usually contains your transcript and letters of reference).  If you are self-managing your file, you will send this.  If you are having another party manage it, your will arrange for them to send it.

Finding Job Listings Out-of-Town If you plan to seek a teaching position outside the Omaha metro area, there are several different things you should do, because you don’t know which of them will let you know about the position you ultimately want and accept.  Make a list of 4-5 of the geographic areas where you would like to teach.  For each of them:

  • If you know where (city/town) you want to teach, subscribe to the largest circulation paper in the area – the Sunday edition only - for about 6 mos. prior to the time you want to be employed there.  Probably most school systems list their positions in one or two papers in the state which reach most of the population.  It shouldn’t cost too much – they can send the paper to you by mail.  There are some school systems that will only list their positions that way.
  • Look on the website of the State Dept. of Education for each state.  Schools often list their positions on their state website. You can find links for the State Departments of Education in the section before this, Other Education Job Listing Sites and Resources.
  • In the same section above this there are many additional web sites related to education – many of them national sites.
  • I would also think about how many miles I was willing to drive to work each day.
    1. Then find the area where you plan to live and draw a circle around it with a radius of that many miles.
    2. Write down the name of every little town in your circle.
    3. Then I would Google the name of all of those towns and schools one at a time  – or school system (“_______” schools, “_____ school system”, “______ public schools”, “____ school district”, etc.)
    4. You should turn up the name of the school system for the area and then you can Google their school district website, and once on their website, search for “jobs” or “employment” etc.
  • If you know someone in the geographic area where you want to teach, be sure to contact that person and let them know that you will be seeking a teaching position.  Ask them to let you know if they hear about anything.  It would be a good idea to send them your resume (after Career Services has checked it over).  Even if this person does not work for the schools themselves, they may know someone who does and will hear about an opening through their acquaintances.

You won’t find many positions listed until mid-February, after the current teachers in the districts who are retiring let their school districts know that they won’t be returning the next year, and the teachers who are leaving for other reasons also notify the school district.  At that point the school district will begin advertising their open positions.

Teaching Overseas  Teaching Overseas can be a great way to spend several years following graduation.  It offers an invaluable experience in another culture which you may find personally enriching, as well as being able to use that multicultural experience to enhance your teaching in the U.S. when you return.  There are a number of organizations which offer guidance in locating a position and beginning your overseas experience.  Generally you will need to consider preparing several requirements before working out of the U.S.:

  • What you will teach (English, other subjects)
  • Valid Passport
  • Work Visa and restrictions on working in the country where you plan to be
  • Teaching certification (if any) sought by the employing organization (ESL, TESOL, TEFL, etc.)
  • Arranging a living situation in a foreign country
  • Costs and income you will need

The following websites offer specific information about several of these topics.

  • Teach Abroad Another placement agency for a wide variety of positions.  Many require ESL or EFL certification, but some do not.  Be aware of the rate of exchange and the cost of living in the countries where the positions are located so that you can gauge where you will require extra funds to make the position workable.
