Philosophy and Policies Regarding Alcohol and Other Drugs

Respect for others, as well as good citizenship, is expected of Dana students, both on and off campus. Students at Dana College are expected to follow guidelines and expectations as described in the Student Handbook. The Student Handbook can be found on-line at www.dana.edu/studenthandbook. Students are expected to be familiar with the current version and expectations outlined in the Student Handbook as it is updated from year to year. These expectations cover student behavior in almost all areas of the campus. There are guidelines for appropriate and inappropriate behavior in areas such as the residence halls, classrooms, parking lots, and off campus. Students who fail to follow these expectations are subject to the campus disciplinary process. Disciplinary action as a result of inappropriate behavior includes (but is not limited to) warnings, fines, probation, suspension, and expulsion. Under certain circumstances, Dana College reserves the right to place students on an Administrative Leave of Absence. During this time, a student may be prohibited from attending classes and/or living on campus for a specified length of time.

The Alcohol and Drug Policy is noted below; please refer to the Student Handbook for the most recent listing of community standards and expectations.

Philosophy and Policies Regarding Alcohol and Other Drugs
It is the belief of Dana College that the inappropriate use of alcohol and other drugs by students presents a serious hindrance to the College’s efforts to provide students with the very best possible educational experience in a Christian community. The creation of a specific philosophical statement, along with the establishment of specific policies, represents efforts by the College to work towards creating a campus environment that is as free of problems brought on by alcohol and other drugs as can possibly be attained.

The abuse of alcohol and other drugs is known to be the greatest factor contributing to problems related to student behavior. Alcohol and other drugs cause impairment, particularly of judgment and control. Inappropriate behavior of students after using alcohol and other drugs impacts everyone. Students electing to use alcohol or other drugs, either on or off campus, will be held accountable for their actions, particularly as they affect others.

The possession, sale, distribution or use of alcohol or illegal drugs on the Dana College campus or at any off-campus student event sponsored by a College organization or group, or any event where College identity is clearly implied, is prohibited.

More information concerning the philosophy and policies regarding alcohol and other drugs may be obtained from the Student Life Office.
