The English program offers an English major with a choice of emphasis
areas as well as a major in English for Secondary Teachers.
Emphasis areas are:
Creative Writing, for students interested in writing poetry,
fiction and drama; and
Pre-Professional/Pre-Graduate School, for students interested
in extensive and intensive study of English, American, European
and other literatures, including drama and film.
The major features a core of six courses which are designed to provide
every student with a solid grounding in the major works and periods
of English, American and World literature and with experience in
the critical analysis of one of the greatest of all writers, William
Shakespeare. Courses in the literatures of Europe and Asia as well
as dramatic and film literature are available as electives. There
are no special requirements for admission to the English major programs
other than a reasonable aptitude as demonstrated by ACT scores.
The Dana English Program provides a background for graduate work
in English leading to teaching at advanced levels. It is also a valuable
education for those interested in library work, information management,
journalism, law, business, the ministry or professional writing.
Students interested in an English major with a suggested preparation
for Pre-Law should refer to “Pre-Professional Studies”.
