FOCUS provides a program of specialized services to students who have completed a substance abuse treatment program, either in-patient or out-patient, have been substance-free for a minimum of six months, demonstrate potential for academic success, and can exhibit evidence of being committed to completing a degree program.

Students enrolled in the program will receive the following support: Separate, chemical-free, zero-tolerance housing accommodations, (available year-round on an optional basis); weekly on-campus 12-step meetings; weekly individual counseling sessions with a certified alcohol and drug abuse counselor; individual academic advising; personalized tutoring, if needed, through the Learning Center; career planning services through the Career Services Office; and technology support as needed through the Computer Services Department.

Recreational activities are an important part of recovery. The Office of Student Life provides over 200 activities annually, which are all alcohol and drug free, encompass a wide variety of interests and are available at no additional cost to the student.

To apply for admission to this program a student must meet Dana’s regular academic standards for admission. In addition, the student must submit: evidence of successfully completing a substance abuse treatment program; letters of recommendation from a primary counselor at treatment program and a person who can speak to the student’s academic potential; and present a personal statement indicating strong motivation to enter Dana College and the FOCUS program.
