The German program offers on-campus courses in language, contemporary
culture, civilization, literature, and German for business as well
as some study abroad.
Dana German faculty are certified Goethe Institute examiners, and
students may take internationally recognized proficiency tests, offered
in April.
In addition to the on-campus course work in German, we encourage
students to spend Discovery Term in Germany and a semester of their
junior year in a German-speaking country.

A two-semester sequence. An introduction to the German language and culture
stressing communicative skill development.

A two-semester sequence. Review of and continued development of communicative
and cultural proficiency.

GER 301 Advanced Language
Skills 3 credits
Practice in understanding spoken and written German, and communicating thoughts
on contemporary issues, both orally and in writing. Study of short literary
texts and materials from the German-speaking media.
Prerequisite: GER 202 Intermediate German II or equivalent.

GER 302 German Contemporary
Short Stories 3 credits
Reading and discussion of short stories by authors from German-speaking countries.
Frequent compositions, individualized review of grammar and style, some student-directed
classroom activities.
Prerequisite: GER 301 Advanced Language Skills or equivalent.

A study of post-war German society and development of communicative skills
necessary to enact oral and written business transactions in German.

An introduction to major writers, literary movements and genres, with reading
and discussion of representative works from the Middle Ages to the present.

An introduction to major writers, literary movements and genres, with reading
and discussion of representative works from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Reading and discussion of representative plays by dramatists such as Brecht
and Dürrenmatt.

and philosophy and their role in Western Civilization.

An introduction to the history of post-war Germany and the social, political
and cultural issues of present-day Germany; reading and discussion of literary

GER 459 German Internship
1-4 credits
On-the-job learning with a cooperating employer coordinated with an on-campus
faculty member. A minimum of 40 clock hours of supervised work is required
for each hour of credit.
Prerequisite: 6 hours of German and permission of instructor
and department chair.
