Directed Study | Readings
and Special Projects | Internships
Coursework such as directed studies, readings, special projects,
and internships are typically delivered on an individual basis and
first require approval by the instructor of record. In addition,
as this mode of instruction significantly impacts on the instructor’s
time, independent studies are purposely held to a minimum and the
permission of the Associate Dean for Student Success is also required.
A form to request approval for independent studies is available in
the Registrar’s Office.
Directed
Study
Directed study involves completion of regular catalog courses at times other
than when offered by the department and must be able to provide the student
with an equivalent experience. The student must first consult with the instructor
who normally teaches the course, and, if approved by the instructor, prepare
and present a written proposal to the Associate Dean for Student Success no
less than three weeks prior to the term for which the directed study is proposed.
This proposal must outline the extenuating circumstances and the proposal must
be approved before the student is allowed to register for the course. A form
is available in the Registrar’s Office.

Readings and Special
Projects
Students wishing to enroll in these and similar courses must first seek permission
from the instructor of record and meet course prerequisites. Typically, these
400-level courses are limited to junior and senior level students in the major.
Students will complete an application form in which they will articulate the
need for this course and the goals, objectives, and assessment methods as identified
by the instructor and the student. A form is available in the Registrar’s
Office.
