The Liberal Arts Reading Program encourages development of oral and written
communication skills through critical reading and thinking. All students and
faculty read and discuss important texts representing a wide range of disciplines
and literary genres. The readings and class discussions enhance students' and
faculty's understanding and appreciation of the liberal arts and promote a
sense of community.

LAR 111 The Successful Researcher 2 credits
This course is an introduction to the research process and prepares
students to succeed at Dana, at work, or in graduate school. Students
will be able to locate and evaluate information from print and
non-print resources. Students will learn to access, evaluate, and
use reference sources, online catalogs, periodical databases, government
documents, archival materials, and the Internet to find information.

LAR 340 Morton Scholar Cross-Cultural
Experience 0 or 3 credits
This is a cross listing to be used by Morton Scholars when registering for
(1) approved international or domestic travel; or (2) an approved off-campus
independent study in cultural diversity done in cooperation with a Dana College
faculty member.
Prerequisite: Morton Scholar in good standing.
Additional information:
Grading: Letter grade.
Assessment: Objectives, outcomes and assessment criteria will be developed
by the student in consultation with a Dana College faculty member and approved
by the Honors Council.

LAR 350 Morton Scholar Community
Service Experience 0.5-1 credit
Supervised voluntary community service in which a student, through an agency,
organization, or institution, assists others in meeting the basic needs of
life. 1 credit may be awarded for 40 hours (0.5 for 20 hours) of community
service. See Dana College Honors Program Handbook for further details.
Prerequisite: Morton Scholar in good standing.
Additional information:
Grading: Pass/Fail
Assessment: Objectives, outcomes and assessment criteria will be developed
by the student in consultation with a Dana College faculty member and approved
by the Honors Council.

LAR 399 Special Topics 1-3

A selected area of study in Liberal Arts. The topic is announced in the appropriate
semester’s course schedule.
Prerequisite: Generally, sophomore standing or permission

LAR 450 Liberal
Arts Senior Seminar 3 credits
An opportunity to integrate learning from major area(s) of study with the broader
background of the general education program. The seminar challenges participants
to explore their conceptual framework of philosophies of life which, in turn,
will form the basis for identifying global problems and articulating strategies
for confronting them.

LAR 470 Morton Scholar Thesis/Project
0 or .5-3 credits
Honors students design a research project, gather and analyze data, and present
the project in a public setting during the final semester of their senior year.
The three-credit research project can be initiated as early as the sophomore
year with students registering for one credit each year. All projects must
be initiated by the beginning of the senior year.
Prerequisite: Morton Scholar in good standing.
Additional information:
Grading: Letter grade.
Assessment: Criteria for grading will be defined by the faculty advisor in
consultation with the student and a letter grade assigned by the faculty advisor
upon the student’s completion of the thesis/project.

LAR 479 Special Projects
1-3 credits
An opportunity to engage in individualized projects which may involve research,
participation and reporting.
Prerequisites: Senior standing, cumulative GPA of 2.5, and
permission of instructor and department chair.
