The Music Department seeks to identify and develop a high degree of appreciation, comprehension and performance abilities within its students with an emphasis on classic musical literature.
Majors in music are designed to prepare graduates for a wide variety of professional positions such as music education at the elementary and secondary levels, private studio instructors, and church positions such as organist and/or choral director. The majors also provide required academic and performance preparations for graduate study in music.

Ensemble requirements 0-4 credits

Students are required to be in the major ensemble of their applied area a minimum of eight semesters.

Each student in this degree program is required to present one full 50 minute recital in the senior year.

Choral Ensemble requirements 0-4 credits
Vocal Endorsement Music Ed majors are required to be in the major choral ensemble a minimum of eight semesters.

The keyboard proficiency examination must be passed by the end of the 5th semester of study.

Each student in this degree program is required to present a 30-minute recital in the junior year.

MUS 102 Instrumental Music Techniques 0-.5 credits
This course reviews the essential fundamentals necessary for independent performance on musical instruments. Included are concepts of tone, intonation, pulse, rhythm, and articulation. Students will participate in a variety of solo and small ensemble experiences, including public performance in Chapel and Music Seminar.

MUS 105 Musicianship I 3 credits
A study of basic scale and chord structures and progressions with practical written exercises. Ear training through singing, melodic and rhythmic dictation will be supplemented by learning how to listen critically to major works of western music. Keyboard skills will be taught through applied lessons. Course includes aural skills lab.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of music theory placement test.

MUS 105L Aural Skills Lab I 1 credit
A beginning ear-training course. Students learn to sing and aurally identify simple intervals, chords and scales. Students develop skills in sight singing and melodic and rhythmic dictation
Prerequisite: MUS 105 Musicianship I or successful completion of music theory placement test.

MUS 106L Aural Skills Lab II 1 credit
A continuation of Aural Skills Lab I. The skills developed in this course involve singing and aurally identifying more advanced intervals, chords, scales, rhythms and melodies. Students work one-on-one with a faculty member on a weekly basis in order to focus on their specific needs in this part of their musicianship training.
Prerequisite: MUS 105 Musicianship I or successful completion of music theory placement test.

MUS 108 Introduction to Lyric Diction and Vocal Repertoire 1 credit
This course is a presentation of the rules and practices of lyric diction for singers, using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). A study of standard solo vocal literature accompanies the course along with strategies for approaching the analysis and translation of song texts.

MUS 115 Public School Music 2 credits
Designed to provide the elementary teacher with the fundamentals of music theory, psychology and methods in order to effectively lead the classroom in appropriate musical activities.
Prerequisite: EDU 121 Introduction to Education and sophomore standing.

MUS 185 Beginning Piano 1 credit
This course is intended to provide grounding in fundamental piano techniques and reading music and to provide a framework for the study of the repertoire for the instrument and/or its use in the school music classroom. The course is open to students with little or no previous piano background.

MUS 186 | 286 | 386 Piano Proficiency 1 credit
This course is designed to prepare the music education major for the piano proficiency examination. The course may be repeated for credit until the necessary skills are mastered. Topics covered include all skills required for satisfactory completion of the piano proficiency exam. Students will register under the appropriate class: FR = 1, SO = 2, JR = 3
Prerequisite: MUS 185 Beginning Piano or permission of instructor.

MUS 209 Music Appreciation 3 credits
A course for non-music majors. No technical competence in music is required. Includes elements of music, musicals, jazz, program music, nationalism, absolute music, short lyric forms, opera, symphony, world music and twentieth-century music.

MUS 215 Musicianship III 3 credits
A continuation of Musicianship II with an exploration of chromatic harmony and function in common practice music. The emphasis is on analysis, part-writing, sight-singing and ear training. Course includes aural skills lab.
Prerequisite: MUS 106 Musicianship II or successful completion of music theory placement test.

MUS 215L Aural Skills Lab III 1 credit
This course is a continuation of Aural Skills Lab I and II, and is designed to further develop aural recognition and memory of material similar to that covered in Musicianship III, with corresponding keyboarding skills.
Prerequisite: MUS 106 Musicianship II or successful completion of music theory placement test.

A culmination of the Musicianship sequence, exploring large forms, analysis in large contexts and composition and instrumentation techniques. Students continue to develop ear training and sight-singing skills. Course includes aural skills lab.

MUS 259 Internship in Chapel Music 1-3 credits
The internship is intended to prepare the student for various aspects of congregational or educational music ministry, according to the student’s interests and abilities. Responsibilities will be determined in consultation with the Director of Chapel Music and may include planning and leadership of worship services, researching sources for chapel music, organizing and rehearsing vocal and/or instrumental ensembles, teaching new music to the assembly, assisting with bulletin design, recruiting peer participants, and/or other areas of interest to the student.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

A study of the evolution of music in western European society from antiquity to the Baroque Era. Musical styles, forms, and genres are studied by reading textbooks, resource materials and journals, classroom discussion, listening to musical examples in and out of class while following the correlating music scores, and various writing projects.
Prerequisite: Junior standing, Musicianship III or permission of instructor.

An exploration of traditional music from significant non-western cultures of the contemporary world, among them Africa, India and Indonesia. The historical, cultural and performance contexts will be surveyed through listening and reading, watching and writing.

Designed to provide knowledge of psychology, theory and practice of music education in the elementary schools. Emphasis is placed upon the nature, organization and maintenance of the elementary music program.

Applied Music 1 credit
Individual instruction in the form of a one-half hour or an hour lesson a week. 100-400 level in the following applied areas: voice, piano, organ, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, euphonium, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, percussion, strings, and guitar.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

Designed to provide knowledge of psychology, theory and practice of music education in the public schools. Emphasis is placed upon the nature, organization and maintenance of the vocal/choral programs.

Designed to provide knowledge of the psychology, theory and practice of instrumental music education in grades 5-12. Emphasis is placed upon the selection of repertoire, rehearsal technique, and program administration.
Prerequisites: MUS 200 Conducting and a major in music education.

MUS 415 Degree Recital in Music 3 credits
This course is a sequence of learning experiences employing several different teaching methods to enable each student to acquire and retain a high degree of knowledge and skill. Teacher and student led activities within the studio, public performance, and self and peer review provide the basis for mastery and learning. Opportunities exist to observe and recognize culturally diverse music via study and performance. The culminating activity of the course will be performance of a public recital.
Prerequisite: At least junior standing.

MUS 459 Internship in Chapel Music 1-3 credits

MUS 493 Dana College Concert Band
The Dana College Concert Band is the principal instrumental ensemble of Dana College. The Concert Band presents concerts both on and off-campus including regular tours to various parts of the country.

MUS 494 Dana College VOICES
VOICES is an unauditioned choral ensemble open to all Dana College students as well as Dana faculty and staff and Blair community members. The ensemble explores American music of all types as well as the music of other cultures, both Western and non-Western, through performance and multicultural events on campus.

MUS 495 Dana College Chorale
Dana College Chorale is an auditioned mixed ensemble that explores quality choral literature while specializing in sacred choral music. The ensemble performs extensively and has toured in Europe, the Orient and throughout North America. A two-semester commitment is required.
