PED 104 Wellness Concepts 1 credit
An introduction to the theory, principles, and practices of diet and nutrition, exercise and stress management as a total part of one’s lifestyle. A CPR section of the class is designed to familiarize students with the knowledge and skills of CPR and enable them to practice these skills in an instructional setting.

Fundamental skills, team techniques, strategy, scheduling, training, organizational problems, equipment needs, rules, and objectives of each sport, as indicated in the titles, are studied.

PED 207 Prevention and Evaluation of Athletic Injuries and Illnesses 3 credits
A study of the prevention, recognition, evaluation, and care of athletic injuries and illnesses. Attention is also given to administration, taping, rehabilitation and the use of protective equipment.

PED 210 Methods of Teaching Team Sports 2 credits
A study of the essential elements of teaching team sports for men and women. The philosophy and purpose of team sports in the education setting are emphasized. (Offered Spring 2005 and alternate years)

PED 211 Methods of Teaching Individual and Dual Sports 2 credits
Designed to promote the development of skill in and knowledge of teaching strategies, error correction, and evaluation in each of the sports commonly included in the public school curriculum. (Offered Fall 2004 and alternate years)

PED 213 Introduction to Physical Education 2 credits
A study of the historical and educational aspects of Physical Education. A survey of the scope of activities in the curriculum of Physical Education is discussed.

PED 215 Techniques of Teaching Rhythmical Activities 2 credits
A study of rhythmic activities and dance examples with appropriate teaching strategies for use in a K-12 curricula (Offered Fall 2005 and alternate years).

PED 217 Advanced Swimming 2 credits
Designed to develop skills leading to qualification as Water Safety Instructor as sanctioned by the American Red Cross.
Prerequisite: PED 132 Beginning Swimming or permission of instructor.

An introduction to the philosophical theories, moral principles and applications used to preserve what is good in physical education and sport. Offered during Discovery Term.

Designed to explore and apply the rules and regulations of sport contests. Students will learn how to implement the rules and effectively officiate such events.

PED 303 Methods of Teaching Physical Education in Elementary Schools 3 credits
Interpretation of materials and study of the characteristics, needs and curriculum for elementary grade age groups are thoroughly studied and analyzed.

PED 304 Perceptual Motor Learning 2 credits
A study of perception as related to motor performance tasks with special emphasis placed on the identification and evaluation of perceptual motor problems at the preschool and elementary levels. Emphasis is placed on curriculum and methodology to enhance perceptual motor performance. (Cross-listed as Special Education SPE 304) (Offered Fall 2006 and alternate years)

PED 308 Adapted Physical Education 2 credits
Designed to introduce the causes and characteristics of prevalent disabilities that influence the motor performances of school-aged children and to gain knowledge in developing appropriate curriculum and teaching techniques to better serve those with special needs. (Cross-listed as Special Education SPE 308)

PED 313 Sports Psychology 2 credits
A study of the major aspects of applied sports psychology, including understanding and development of techniques of motivation and communication that lead to a maximum effectiveness for each player and team.

PED 314 Measurement and Evaluation in Sport and Exercise Science 3 credits
A study of test selection, construction, and statistical analysis appropriate for the assessment and evaluation of knowledge and performance of students in both educational and sport performance settings.

PED 322 Sport Facility Management 2 credits
A study of sport facility management, common problems encountered, possible solutions and methods on how to properly address those situations. Emphasis will be placed on facility staffing, budgeting, maintenance, preventative maintenance, replacement, building design, and liabilities. (Offered Spring 2006 and alternate years)
Prerequisite: BUS 303 Principles of Management.

PED 323 Sociology of Sport 2 credits
Designed to explore the relationship between sport and various parts of society. Students will analyze this relationship through a theoretical perspective and through class discussions.

A selected area of study in physical education. The topic is announced in the appropriate semester’s course schedule.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of instructor. Offered as needed.

PED 402 Legal Issues in Sport 3 credits
Designed to explore the law and its implications in sport, physical education, and sport management. Students will review case studies and other literature in order to better understand the legal system, Tort law, liability, and other legal principles.
Prerequisites: PED 322 Sports Facility Management & 6 additional hours in Physical Education courses.

PED 404 Organization and Administration of Sport 3 credits
A study of the curriculum, administration of classes, philosophy and objectives of Physical Education, equipment and supplies, and facilities. Secondary school level is emphasized.

PED 459 Physical Education Internship 1-4 credits
On-the-job learning with a cooperating employer in conjunction with a faculty member. A minimum of 40 clock hours of supervised work is required for each hour of credit.
Prerequisites: Major in Physical Education and permission of department chair.

Designed to introduce each student to the methodology of research in a particular area of interest; methods of inquiry, critical analysis, project design and evaluation are emphasized.
