Philosophy
Dana College tries to approach students as developing, growing individuals. We believe that developing students’ increased independence over their years of study is part of academic success. A 2.00 cumulative grade point average (GPA) is required for graduation, so it is the primary standard for academic policies. Failure to make progress toward completion of a degree is the primary reason students are placed on probation or suspension.

Academic Probation
A student is placed on probation for one of the following reasons:

  1. the cumulative GPA is below 2.00;
  2. the most recently completed semester’s GPA is below 2.00;
  3. admitted under committee acceptance for the first semester at Dana College.

Academic Suspension
A student is placed on suspension for one of the following reasons:

  1. two consecutive semesters of probation;
    (when students are admitted by committee acceptance, they are placed on academic probation; if they are placed on probation after their first semester, this is considered two consecutive semesters of probation)
  2. three non-consecutive semesters of probation.
    Standard Exception to Suspension Rules
    If the most recent semester’s GPA shows progress toward degree completion (normally meaning 2.00 or higher for that semester), the student will generally not be suspended but will remain on probation until the cumulative GPA is 2.00 or higher.

Readmission After Suspension

  1. Upon the first suspension, students have the right to petition for readmission for the next semester if their cumulative GPA is 2.00 or higher. Petitions will be reviewed based on the Fall or Spring semester grade point averages.
  2. Upon the first suspension, if students have a cumulative GPA below 2.00, they must wait one semester (Fall or Spring) before they are allowed to petition for readmission.
  3. If students are suspended and have been previously suspended, they must wait two semesters (Fall and Spring or Spring and Fall) before they are allowed to petition for readmission.

A student may petition to the Academic Standards and Admissions Committee for readmission based on the conditions listed above. The petitioning process consists of the student filing a written Petition for Readmission with the Registrar’s Office no later than three weeks prior to the first class day of the semester (Fall or Spring) for which admission is being sought. The petition is reviewed by the Academic Standards and Admissions Committee. The petitioning student may also be required to appear personally before the Committee. When students are suspended at the end of a semester, they are not allowed to return to Dana College for any semester (excluding Discovery Term and first Summer term) until they are readmitted by the Committee. The decision of the Committee is final.
