The Spanish program prepares students for careers in teaching, business, social work, the ministry, foreign service and journalism. There are no specific requirements for admission to the program. Language ability will be assessed for placement and possible transcripting of prior knowledge in Spanish.

In addition to the regular course work in Spanish, students are encouraged to spend a Discovery Term in a Spanish-speaking country and a semester of their junior year studying abroad.

SPA 101, SPA 102 Introduction to Spanish Language & Culture I, II 3 credits each semester
A two-semester sequence. Development of basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Spanish. Dialogues and discussion of short texts on Spanish culture and life in Spanish-speaking countries. Students research different cultures and present their research to the class. This class has a short introduction to the fine arts of Spain and Latin America.

SPA 201, SPA 202 Intermediate Spanish I, II 3 credits each semester
A two-semester sequence. Review of grammar and continued training in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Introduction to Spanish and Latin American civilizations as well as the literature and history of Spain.
Prerequisite: SPA 102 Introduction to Spanish Language & Culture II or equivalent.

SPA 301 Advanced Language Skills 3 credits
Practice in understanding spoken and written Spanish and communicating thoughts on contemporary issues, both orally and in writing. Study of short stories. This class emphasizes the development of modern literary trends. A research paper and theatrical presentations are part of the evaluation process.
Prerequisite: SPA 202 Intermediate Spanish II or equivalent.

SPA 302 Spanish Contemporary Short Stories 3 credits
Reading and discussion of short stories by authors from Spanish-speaking countries. Frequent compositions, individualized review of grammar and style, some student-directed classroom activities. This class emphasizes modern literary trends. A research paper and oral presentations are part of the evaluation process.
Prerequisite: SPA 301 Advanced Language Skills or equivalent.

SPA 304 Business Spanish 3 credits
For students interested in using Spanish in a business-related career. The student will learn communicative skills necessary to enact oral and written business transactions in Spanish.
Prerequisite: SPA 301 Advanced Language Skills or equivalent. Offered as needed.

A selected area of study in Spanish. The topic is announced in the appropriate semester’s course schedule.

SPA 401 Survey of Spanish Literature 3 credits
Introduction to major writers and literary movements, with reading and discussion of representative works. Selection in various genres from the literature of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. A comparative survey of significant works, development of realism and other literary trends. This class also studies literary philosophies.
Prerequisite: SPA 301 Advanced Language Skills or SPA 302 Spanish Contemporary Short Stories or equivalent. Offered alternate years.

SPA 402 Spanish Civilization 3 credits
Readings on and discussion of Spanish history, art, architecture, music, literature and philosophy and their role in Western Civilization.
Prerequisite: SPA 302 Spanish Contemporary Short Stories or equivalent. Offered alternate years.

SPA 405 The Spanish Novel 3 credits
A thorough and complete study of the main Spanish novels which have made an impact on Spanish and world literature. The course aims to increase the student’s general familiarity with a variety of authors and literary genres. This class studies various methods of criticism and literary philosophies.
Prerequisites: SPA 301 Advanced Language Skills and SPA 302 Spanish Contemporary Short Stories or equivalent. Offered alternate years.

SPA 406 The Spanish Novel of the 19th Century 3 credits
A thorough study of 19th century Spanish novels from a variety of authors such as Zorrilla, Becquer, Ibanez, Alarcon, and Caballero. This class studies various methods of criticism and literary philosophies.

SPA 459 Spanish Internship 1-4 credits
On-the-job learning with a cooperating employer coordinated with an on-campus faculty member. A minimum of 40 clock hours of supervised work is required for each semester hour of credit.
Prerequisites: Six credits in Spanish and permission of instructor and department chair.

An in-depth study of selected readings in Spanish literature and civilization. A maximum of six credits may be earned in this course.
