The Theater Arts program provides a foundation in the historical
and practical aspects of theater, stressing onstage performance and
comprehension of dramatic texts. The minor in Theater Arts is selected
by students from a wide variety of majors and is recommended for
anyone 1) planning to continue performing on either the community
or professional level, 2) preparing to teach literature, history,
religion, psychology, sociology, art and/or music 3) seeking a career
in interacting with the public or 4) continuing their education in
graduate school. This program is almost unique in the United States
because the capstone course allows a student to prepare a one-person
forty-five to fifty minute show that can be dramatic, or dramatic
and musical.
The Musical Theater major focuses on developing the singing, dancing
and acting talents of students who may want to continue on to a
professional performance career, but also those who may want to continue
developing
their performance skills but pursue a career outside of the theater.
Double majors are encouraged, and provisions are made for students
transferring from community colleges. The students receive a BA
degree, making them considerably more marketable upon graduation
than students
graduating from BFA programs. Advertising, marketing, sales management
and journalism are all fields in which a Musical Theater major
combined with another major would be appropriate.
