The term "community journalism" refers to journalism that emphasizes local-first coverage and service to the community. It is most common in newspapers with circulations under 50,000. Community Journalism majors learn the principles of news judgment and ethical decision-making while acquiring fundamental reporting, writing and editing skills.

Careers in journalism include reporter, editor, broadcaster, script writer, technical writer and newsletter production. Optional emphasis areas for Community Journalism majors are visual and broadcast media, design and writing.
