Dana Teams
Sweep First Meet; first time since 2001
Season Update: Dana’s men’s and women’s
cross country teams competed in their first meet of the season last
Saturday. On September 9, the Viking harriers hosted York College and
Dordt College at the Dana Open. Both the men’s and women’s squads won
their respective team titles, the first time that has happened in five
years. Dana will travel to the Woody Greeno Invitational on Saturday,
Sept. 16.
Kaup takes individual title, freshman leads
women: Dana’s John Kaup (4th Yr, Grand Island, NE)
started the ’06 season much like he did in 2005, by winning the Dana
Open individual title. Kaup took home the gold in the 8,000 meter race
with a 28:31. On the women’s side, freshman surprise Chelsea Fibranz
(1st Yr, McPherson, KS) led her team with a third place overall
finish in a time of 22:10.
Short on depth, deep in talent: The 2006
season began with an injury plagued squad, losing two runners before the
season began. But the short numbered team proved that you only need five
to win. Close behind freshman standout Fibranz was Jen Anderson (3rd
Yr, Lincoln, NE), finishing 4th overall in 22:36. Amy Jackman
(2nd Yr, Seward, NE) bettered her previous Dana Open time by 20
seconds, running 23:06 to finish 5th overall. Two freshmen rounded out
the Vikings scoring and were on the heels of Jackman down the stretch.
Rachel Ness (1st Yr, Seward, NE) and Christine Bailey (1st Yr,
Omaha/Burke) finished 6th and 7th respectively, with times of 23:14
and 23:27.
Men put 5 in top 8: The men’s team returned
to a full squad for the first time in a year. And they didn’t
disappoint. Freshman Cory Logsdon (1st Yr, Fort Calhoun, NE) ran
one of the best first year races in recent memory with a third place,
29:50 clocking. He was followed by Eric Bane (3rd Yr, Oakland,
IA/Riverside), who finished fourth with a 30:28. The next four
finishers for Dana would be freshmen. Andrew Palmblade (1st Yr,
Hastings, NE) and Kevin Bane (1st Yr, Oakland, IA/Riverside)
completed Dana’s scoring with 6th and 9th place performances, running
30:48 and 31:33 respectively. Tim Kruger (1st Yr, Bellevue/East)
was close behind Bane, finishing in 11th place with a 31:57. Local
standout Tyler Petersen (1st Yr, Blair, NE) had an impressive
first run with a 14th place finish, clocking 32:23. Dual athlete Keil
Montgomery (2nd Yr, Indianola, IA) completed his first 8K experience
with a 34:33, good enough for 22nd overall. Montgomery also plays for
Dana’s men’s soccer team in the fall. Senior Greg Rickenbacher (4th
Yr, Tacoma, WA) out-dueled a Dordt runner to finish 23rd with a
34:40.
Weekly Quote from the coach: “The course was
pretty rough today, but our runners were up to the task,” Head Coach
Derek Fey said. “Both of our squads need to work on lowering our pack
time. Our women have it in them because we’ve seen it in practice, and
the men have to find a way to get closer to the front. For our first
race of the season, it was a great start to even greater things in the
future.”
