Runners compete
against nations best teams
Season Update: Dana’s men’s and women’s
cross country teams competed at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder,
Colorado, on Sept. 30. The University of Colorado was ranked third in
NCAA Division I, and Adams State and Western State ranked 1st and 3rd in
NCAA Division II. Dana’s toughest opponent, however, was the altitude.
Longer race and mile high altitude plays role:
The women’s team had to deal with a climb in altitude, as well as
nearly 1,000 meters added to their normal race distance. The meet was
competed at the NCAA Division I distance for women. Jen Anderson (3rd
Yr, Lincoln, NE/Lutheran) led the way for the women’s team,
finishing in 25:33, good for 86th place. A pair of freshmen came in
next, with a large time difference, but found themselves only separated
by 13 places. Chelsea Fibranz (1st Yr, McPherson, KS) and
Rachel Ness (1st Yr, Seward, NE) came in 99th and 112th, with times
of 26:07 and 27:20, respectively. Sophomore Amy Jackman (2nd Yr,
Seward, NE) was not far behind Ness, placing 118th with a 27:50.
Rounding out the women’s scoring was freshman Christine Bailey (1st
Yr, Omaha, NE/Burke) who was only three places behind Jackman,
running 28:28.
Lack of oxygen slows times a bit: Senior
John Kaup (4th Yr, Grand Island, NE) ran a strong 28:17,
placing him 60th overall. Junior Eric Bane (3rd Yr, Oakland, IA)
finished in 88th place with a 29:17. Freshman Andrew Palmblade (1st
Yr, Hastings, NE) ran to his best team finish this year, with a
31:03 to place 123rd. Freshman Cory Logsdon (1st Yr, Fort
Calhoun, NE) battled asthma and the altitude to finish 126th place,
with a 31:17. A couple of freshmen battled over the last mile for the
fifth spot on the team. Tim Kruger (1st Yr, Bellevue, NE/East)
put together a good final half mile to finish in 134th place, edging out
Kevin Bane (1st Yr, Oakland, IA) by two spots with times of 32:24
and 32:37, respectively. Senior Greg Rickenbacher (4th Yr, Tacoma,
WA) ran faster than his first Dana meet, placing 139th with a 33:08.
Sophomore Kiel Montgomery (2nd Yr, Indianola, IA), duked it out
with another runner for the final three miles, leaving him in the final
100 meters to finish 150th with a 36:31. Freshman and Blair native
Tyler Petersen (1st Yr, Blair, NE) sat out the meet to heal a sore
knee.
Weekly Quote from the coach: “The Shootout
is always a fun trip, and I think everyone enjoyed Boulder,” Head Coach
Derek Fey said. “The course is moderately difficult, but the competition
is top notch. I did have to chuckle when Mark Wetmore, the head coach at
the University of Colorado, told me the hill on the course was named
‘killer hill.’ A few of our runners suggested he take his team to Blair
to see a real hill.”
