Runners Show
Improvement at Doane
Season Update: Dana’s men’s and women’s
cross country teams competed at the Dean White Invitational Sept. 23.
The meet featured a mix of NAIA and NCAA teams as well as a few teams
from NAIA Region III, the region in which Dana competes.
Men improve pack time: The men’s team broke
three minutes for their pack time for the first time this season,
running 2:44 for their 1-5 runners. Senior John Kaup (4th Yr,
Grand Island, NE) placed 5th overall with a 26:49. Junior Eric
Bane (3rd Yr, Oakland, IA) helped pull freshman Cory Logsdon (1st
Yr, Fort Calhoun, NE) to a quick time, running to a 16th/17th finish
in 28:13 and 28:17, respectively. Freshman Andrew Palmblade (1st Yr,
Hastings, NE) finished 22nd in 29:00. Freshman Kevin Bane (1st
Yr, Oakland, IA) lopped off 2 minutes from his previous season best,
to complete Dana’s scoring with a 28th place finish in 29:33. Tim
Kruger (1st Yr, Bellevue, NE/East) took almost a minute off his
season best with a 37th place finish in 30:24. Tyler Petersen (1st
Yr, Blair, NE) was right on Kruger’s heels, running a 30:36 to
finish 40th. Senior Greg Rickenbacher (4th Yr, Tacoma, WA) got
back on track taking nearly three and a half minutes off his season best
with a 31:10 to finish 42nd. Sophomore Kiel Montgomery (2nd Yr,
Indianola, IA), bothered by knee problems, finished in 50th place
with a 34:18.
Women move up through field: The women’s
team saw similar drops in times that the men’s team experienced. Junior
Jen Anderson (3rd Yr, Lincoln, NE), led the way for the women’s
team, finishing 21st with a 21:28. Freshman Rachel Ness (1st
Yr, Seward, NE) had a breakthrough race, taking a minute and half
off her previous best, running to a 26th place in 21:44. Freshman
Chelsea Fibranz (1st Yr, McPherson, KS) battled with a cold to
finish in 29th place with a 21:55. Freshman Christine Bailey (1st Yr,
Omaha/Burke) ran to a 40th place finish in 23:15. Close behind
Bailey was sophomore Amy Jackman (2nd Yr, Seward, NE), who had
sore leg issues all week, finished in 42nd place with a 23:43.
Weekly Quote from the coach: “Some of our
runners are dealing with ailments, but out of 14 runners, 13 of them ran
their fastest time of the season,” Head Coach Derek Fey said. “We’re
showing signs of improvement. As we approach our peaking phase, we will
see times drop even more.”
