Quick Opening
Pace Makes for Long Day
Season Update: Dana’s men’s and women’s
cross country teams competed at the Woody Greeno Invitational last
Saturday. The invitational is the largest meet that Dana will compete in
during the 2006 season. Both squads finished in the bottom quarter of
the team results. Meet conditions didn’t help the cause, as runners
faced warm temperatures and a fierce south wind.
Too much distance: The men’s team put one
runner in the top 30 in the college division, but the 2-5 pack time
caught up in the end. Senior John Kaup (4th Yr, Grand Island,
NE) placed 29th in the college division with a 27:30. A fast first
mile would prove costly for Dana’s 2-8 runners. Dana’s second runner
came in almost two minutes after Kaup. Freshman Cory Logsdon (1st Yr,
Fort Calhoun, NE) finished 103rd with a 29:18. Close behind Logsdon
was junior Eric Bane (3rd Yr, Oakland, IA) who finished in 112th
place with a 29:28. Freshman Andrew Palmblade (1st Yr, Hastings, NE)
continued his impressive opening collegiate season with a 134th
finish in 29:57. Another freshman stepped up to be the new fifth runner.
Tim Kruger (1st Yr, Bellevue, NE/East) placed 189th with a 31:21.
Tyler Petersen (1st Yr, Blair, NE) by far had his best race of
the young season, finishing in 194th place, with a 31:32. Also running
for the Vikings were Kevin Bane (1st Yr, Oakland, IA) and senior
Greg Rickenbacher (4th Yr, Tacoma, WA) who finished 232nd and
245th with times of 33:59 and 36:00, respectively.
Quick start ensures slower finish: Dana’s
women’s team suffered the same fate of a first quick mile that the men
did. The extra 1,000 meters did its job of exposing the quicker pace.
Junior Jen Anderson (3rd Yr, Lincoln, NE), led the way for the
women’s team, finishing 71st in the college division with a 26:06
for 6,000 meters. Freshman Chelsea Fibranz (1st Yr, McPherson, KS)
took the pace out very quickly, running a 6:17 first mile. Fibranz
would finish in 99th place with a 26:57. Another freshman Rachel Ness
(1st Yr, Seward, NE), running with a cold, came in over a minute
later with a 28:14, good for 136th place. Amy Jackman (2nd Yr,
Seward, NE) was close on Ness’s heels, finishing in 139th place with
a 28:22. Freshman Christine Bailey (1st Yr, Omaha/Burke) did her
best to hold onto Jackman in the last mile, finishing in 148th place
with a 28:40.
Weekly Quote from the coach: “Andrew came
up to me after the race and said, ‘Coach, after I ran 5:20 for my first
mile, I told myself, “this is going to be a long race.”’ I think Andrew
was speaking for the entire team. With the exception of John and Jen,
all of our runners came through extremely fast for the first mile, and
it showed in the results. Hopefully we learn from it, and I can
guarantee we won’t make that mistake again.”
