If prequisites have been completed, current secondary teachers will be able to complete their special education endorsement in as few as 35 credit hours.

Courses that you should have already completed:

  • Introduction to Exceptional Children (3)
  • Introduction to Education (3)
  • Reading and Writing in Content Areas (3)

First summer:

  • Inclusion: Strategies for Teaching Learnings with Special Needs (3)
    An overview of mild/moderate disabilities for teachers who will work with K-12 students with the following disabilities: hearing impairments, speech/language disorders, including autism, visual impairments, orthopedic impairments, mild/moderate mentally handicapped, emotional and behavioral disorders, ADHD and traumatic brain injury. The primary focus of the course will be the successful inclusion of students with mild/moderate disabilities in the regular classroom.
  • Strategies for Teaching At-Risk Students (3)
    This course will focus on effective teaching strategies for students with diverse needs. The class will include delivery of effective instruction, classroom management, including behavioral interventions and accommodation practices. Specific techniques and instructional methods will be introduced.

Fall semester (evening course):

  • Methods of Teaching Students with Behavioral Disorders (3)
    This course will focus on the characteristics and needs of the behaviorally disordered student with emphasis on effective teaching and management strategies and techniques. A focus of the course will be the successful inclusion of students with behavioral disabilities in the regular education system.

Discovery Term/January (directed study):

  • Curriculum for Special Education (2)

Spring semester (evening course):

  • Secondary Issues in Special Education (3)
    This course will focus on effective career and vocational strategies for secondary students with diverse needs.

Second summer:

  • Methods and Materials of Teaching Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities (2)
    This course will focus on effective teaching methods and materials for students with diverse needs.
  • Methods of Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities (2)
    This course will focus on the field of learning disabilities, including theories, diagnoses and effective teaching strategies for students with diverse needs.
  • Special Education Assessment (2)
    This class will provide an understanding of the purpose and importance of diagnostic measurements in special education.
    Offered as needed:
  • Internship (3-5)
    On the job learning with a cooperating teacher and college supervision. A minimum of 40 clock hours of supervised work is required for each semester hour of credit.

    Designed to introduce the causes and characteristics of prevalent disabilities that influence the motor performances of school-aged children and to gain knowledge in developing appropriate curriculum and teaching techniques to better serve those with special needs.
