Winning entries will earn up to $1,500 in prize money
Dana
College will team up with the National Anti-Defamation League
and the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa, to present
the first national Tribute to the Danes and Other Rescuers
Essay Contest for high school students this spring.
The contest,
planned to be an annual event, is designed to encourage Omaha-area
students in grades 9 through 12 to take
the lessons
of World War II and the Holocaust and apply them to their
lives. Participants choose one historical event that exemplifies
moral
courage and then write a 500-750 word essay on the event.
Entries are due by Feb. 28 and contest awards will be presented
at
a ceremony on April 29.
All entries will be judged by professional
volunteers using a rubric designed by Dana College personnel
that measures
quality of expression, originality and interpretation of
theme. One
first
place award of $1,500, two second place awards of $750
and three third place awards $500 will be given. Awards also
will be granted
to teachers who encourage the most essays to be submitted.
Students
and/or teachers interested in participating in the contest
are encouraged to contact Jordana Glazer of
the Omaha
ADL office
at (402) 334-6576.
