Dr. Susan Udey has learned a lot about business the hard
way: through entry-level jobs at insurance agencies, dealerships
and kennels — to name a few. It was when the Xenith plant
she was working for in Sioux City closed that she got her chance
to break away.
The closing was the third in the area in a short amount of time, causing
the government to officially label Sioux City as in need of economic
development and qualifying thousands of people for free education to
further their training. Many of her former coworkers went to a community
college, but Udey convinced administrators to let her complete her bachelor's
degree instead. From there she was able to earn her master's and doctorate
(from the University of Nebraska), and find something she really loved — teaching.
" I like interaction with students," she said. "It's wonderful
when you can see their face when an idea finally clicks, when they finally get
it."

Udey stresses to students that they need to gain experience outside
the classroom, especially through community service and civic organizations.
" You learn through helping: Organizing materials, being in front of groups
of people, handling discussions," she said.
Udey practices what she preaches. She's involved in many community service
efforts, either for Blair High School or for Dana.
" Students who are involved get better jobs because they have better résumés," she
said. "You can't be passive if you want a good job."
