Sept. 26, 2005

Dana wide receiver Javon Bell (Miami, Fla.) set a new school record with a 98-yard touchdown reception in Saturday’s football game between Dana and the University of Sioux Falls. The touchdown was part of a Viking scoring rally in which Dana outscored the USF Cougars 22-9 in the second half. But it wasn’t enough to overcome a first-half deficit, and the Vikings fell 22-53.

It was in the second half that Tom Lensch (David City, Neb.) announced his return as quarterback by completing four passes for 60 yards and a touchdown on his opening drive. Lensch’s next pass was the record-setting 98-yard touchdown pass play to Bell. Then, at the top of the fourth quarter, Lensch connected with Dan Irwin (Bellevue, Neb.) for 24 yards and Rick Lebeda (Omaha, Neb.) for 47 yards and a third touchdown. In just more than 15 minutes of play, Lensch had 280 passing yards.

Lensch finished the day with 344 yards of total offense. He completed 15-of-27 passes for three touchdowns.

A 27-yard Lebeda field goal lifted the Vikings to 22 points.

“ The difference in our team from the first half to the second was night and day. We finally relaxed and played in the second half — offense, defense and special teams,” Head Coach Bill Danenhauer said.

Bell led the Vikings offense with 153 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions. Matt Neesen (Omaha, Neb.) had 41 yards total offense, but 132 yards on returns.

The Viking defense and special teams made some big plays in the second half, as well. Shawn Roll (Gretna, Neb.) and Chris Reinke (Omaha, Neb.) each intercepted a pass off of the Cougars’ starting quarterback. Shaun O’Connell (Omaha, Neb.) forced a fumble that was recovered by Ben Ryan (Omaha, Neb.) And Kurt Ferguson (Omaha, Neb.) knocked down four solo tackles all in the fourth quarter.

Key tackles by Alex Hook (Omaha, Neb.) on Dana’s special teams kept the Cougars’ return yardage low.

Dana is now 2-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. They host 1-2 Concordia University next Saturday in the Dana College Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
