“ Our defense played a super game,” he
said.
Dana’s Viking Fury Defense played a nearly perfect game. And in true Viking
style, Dana’s offense punched out 49 plays for 319 yards in the first half.
By halftime, the Vikings held a 17-7 lead over the Bulldogs.
A huge crowd of fans enjoyed nice weather and the return of quarterback Tom Lensch
(David City, Neb.) Lensch, who missed several games due to injury, started for
the Vikings on Saturday.
On Dana’s opening drive, Lensch completed five passes to move the Vikings
80 yards for a touchdown. He threw to Javon Bell (Miami, Fla.) for a 16-yard
gain, then to Greg Hill (Omaha, Neb.) for 28 yards. After a few small gains,
Lensch connected with Matt Neesen (Omaha, Neb.) for 15 yards. Neesen then ran
the ball into the end zone to score.
In the second quarter, Lensch hooked up with Bell again, this time for 41 yards.
Lensch then ran 10 yards for the touchdown.
Rick Lebeda (Omaha, Neb.) kicked a 21-yard field goal on the final play of the
first half to give the Vikings 17 points.
In the second half, wide receiver Bell, who was also playing special teams, made
the play of the game. Bell got his hand on a 35-yard Concordia field goal attempt
and blocked it. In the end, the play would mean a 3-point difference and a Viking
win.
Bell finished the day with five receptions for 102 yards. Hill and Neesen each
had six catches. Neesen turned in 101 yards total offense. Lensch completed 28-of-48
passes for 325 yards. He also ran for 30 yards and had one touchdown.
In all, the Viking defense broke up six passes, brought down three sacks, grabbed
three interceptions and forced a fumble. Mike Buchanan (Omaha, Neb.) topped the
Viking tackle charts with eight tackles (six solo, four assisted). Greg Wilmes
(Creighton, Neb.) had one interception. Trevor Ketelsen (Omaha, Neb.) had two.
Shawn Roll (Omaha, Neb.) and Chris Reinke (Omaha, Neb.) each broke up two passes.
Willie Crawford (Hopland, Calif.) forced a fumble. Ryan Hoden (Council Bluffs,
Iowa) sacked Concordia’s quarterback for a loss of 11 yards. Michael York
(Bellevue, Neb.), Reinke and Wilmes were in on Dana’s two other sacks.
The Vikings are now 3-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference will travel to
Hastings College on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
