Oct. 15, 2005

Dana College football defeated Briar Cliff University 45-28 Saturday in Blair. The win is the fourth straight win at home for the Dana Vikings.

Ahead 17-14 at halftime, the Vikings literally ran away with the game in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Chargers 21-0. Dana, a team with a very pass-happy offense, took to the ground in the fourth quarter. Viking running back Matt Neesen (Omaha, Neb.) ran for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns in the fourth quarter alone.

Neesen finished the game with 153 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 43 yards receiving, giving him nearly 200 yards of offense in the game.

“I’ve got to credit the O-line: Terry Zitkovich (Honolulu, Hawaii), Nick Harms (Omaha, Neb.), Jeremy Havener (Clarinda, Iowa), Josh Moore (Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Jeff Dukat (Gretna, Neb.) It’s because of them we were able to rush for 190 yards,” Dana Head Coach Bill Danenhauer said.

“This was an all-around great game. Offense, Defense, Special Teams- everyone did their part. This is a bunch of kids that are working hard together- it’s neat to watch.”

The Vikings scored first on a pass that went through the hands of #88 Greg Hill ((Omaha, Neb.) but was caught by Dana’s Nick Rupe (Ft. Calhoun, Neb.) for the touchdown.

In the second quarter, Rick Lebeda (Omaha, Neb.), kicked a 23-yard field goal to boost the Vikings to ten.

On Dana’s next drive, quarterback Tom Lensch (David City, Neb.) completed a 43-yard pass to Javon Bell (Miami, Fla.) which put the ball at first and goal on the 4 yard line. Neesen ran the ball into the end zone.

After halftime, Marcus Sladek (Omaha, Neb.) replaced Lensch at quarterback. Sladek connected with Bell late in the third for an 11-yard touchdown reception. At the top of the fourth, it was Sladek and Bell again, this time for 21 yards and a touchdown. Dana’s defense dominated the Chargers and Neesen ran for two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to give the Vikings a total 45 points.

Sladek finished the day with 12 completions on 23 attempts and 2 touchdowns. Lensch was 14 for 29 with 1 touchdown.

Bell caught 13 passes for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Dana’s leading tackler, Mike Buchanan (Omaha, Neb.), had 7 solo and 3 assisted tackles in the game. Buchanan also intercepted a pass and returned it 24-yards. Shaun O’Connell (Omaha, Neb.), Greg Wilmes (Creighton, Neb.), Shawn Roll (Gretna, Neb.), and Chris Reinke (Omaha, Neb.) continue to anchor the Viking Fury defense. Saturday’s success was truly a team effort with Clayton Timm (Treynor, Iowa), Ben Ryan (Omaha, Neb.), Alex Ash (Hollywood, Fla.), Terrance McLean (San Antonio, TX), Ryan Hoden (Council Bluffs, Iowa) and others making great defensive plays for the Vikings as well.

The Vikings now 4-3 overall are also climbing to the top of the GPAC statistics. Bell has the most receptions/game and reception yards in the GPAC. Neesen leads the GPAC in all purpose yards. Quarterbacks Lensch and Sladek are both at the top of the pass completion percentages. Buchanan has the most solo tackles in the GPAC with thirty-eight.

Dana football steps out of the GPAC for a non-conference match up with Waldorf College. Kickoff is set for 1pm on Saturday in Forrest City, Iowa.
