Sioux City, IA—Marcus Sladek (SO, Omaha, NE) threw
four touchdown passes, and the Dana defense held Briar Cliff to 167
total yards on Saturday as the Vikings defeated the Chargers 38-0. Dana
raised its record to 4-3 (4-3 GPAC). Briar Cliff fell to 3-4 (2-4
GPAC).
After a scoreless first quarter, Dana
exploded in the second quarter for 24 points. The scoring started with
12:47 left in the second on a 22 yard Rick Lededa (SR, Omaha, NE) field
goal. Dana then got an 8 yard scoring run from wide receiver Javon Bell
(SR, Miami, FL). With 4:16 remaining in the half, Sladek hit Greg Hill
(SR, Omaha, NE) on a 27 yard scoring pass. The final score of the half
came on a Tom Lensch (SR, David City, NE) 52 yard catch and run on a
pass from Sladek.
The Vikings scored two more times in
the second half. In the third quarter on a nine yard pass from Sladek
to Bell. In the fourth quarter Sladek hooked up with Greg Hill again
for a 20 yard pass and catch.
Sladek finished the game 20 of 29
passing for 228 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Matt Neesen
(SR, Omaha, NE) rushed the ball 25 times for 117 yards. Greg Hill
caught 8 passes for 87 yards and two scores. Javon Bell caught four
passes for 35 yards and one touchdown and also scored a rushing
touchdown.
Defensively, Dana held the Chargers to
only 71 yards on 27 carries. Linebacker Shaun O’Connell (SR, Omaha, NE)
led the charge with nine total tackles including two tackles for loss
and a sack. O’Connell also forced a fumble. James Moran (SO, Omaha,
NE) had five tackles and blocked a punt. Defensive back Chris Reinke
had four solo tackles, an interception, and two pass break-ups.
The Vikings will next be in action at
home on Saturday, October 21, at 1:00 PM against non-conference foe
Waldorf (1-5).
