Blair, NE—Dana College (6-3, 5-3 GPAC) defeated
Midland College (1-8, 1-8 GPAC) 26-13 in Blair on Saturday. The win was
Dana’s fifth in a row and guaranteed Dana’s first winning season since
1995.
The Vikings took control of the game on
the first drive of the second half. After turning the ball over 3 times
in the first half, the Vikings still had a 7-6 halftime lead. Dana took
the opening drive of the second half 65 yards in 15 plays capping off
the drive with a 1 yard Matt Neesen (SR, Omaha, NE) run to take a 14-6
lead. Neesen led the Vikings in rushing carrying the ball 32 times for
146 yards.
On the next Midland possession the
Warriors snapped the ball over the head of their punter leading to a
safety and a 16-6 Viking lead. Following an exchange of punts by each
team, the Vikings scored again, this time on a 1 yard pass from Marcus
Sladek (SO, Omaha, NE) to Javon Bell (SR, Miami, FL) that capped a 4
play 38 yard drive.
Dana quarterback Marcus Sladek
completed 19 of 32 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Javon Bell
caught 6 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Greg
Hill (Omaha, NE) caught 4 passes for 39 yards and also had a 10 yard
touchdown run. The Vikings totaled 360 yards of offense on the
afternoon.
The Dana defense intercepted Midland
quarterback Terance Maahs four times on the afternoon including two
interceptions by junior Trevor Ketelsen (JR, Bloomfield, NE). Dana
safety Chris Reinke (SR, Omaha, NE) had 7.5 total tackles and an
interception that ended the last Midland drive. Linebacker Mike
Buchanan (SR, Omaha, NE) had 7.5 tackles and defensive back Brandon
Terry (SO, Omaha, NE) had 3 tackles and an interception. The Dana
defense held Midland to 70 rushing yards.
Dana’s next contest is at 1:00 PM on
Saturday, November 4, in Orange City, IA, versus Northwestern College
(8-1, 7-1 GPAC). The Vikings have not beaten the Red Raiders since
1971.
