Resources

Study Sessions: Regularly scheduled study sessions are organized for selected classes. Sessions are led by students who have taken or who are taking the classes and who are recommended by the professor. During study sessions, students review lecture notes, work on homework, and prepare for exams. Classes with study sessions have included General Chemistry, Introduction to Religion, World Civilizations, and Biology 121. Students who attend study sessions earn higher average test grades than their classmates who don’t attend.

Peer Tutors: Peer tutors are available at regular weekly times and by appointment to assist with homework and test review for various classes. Tutors have taken the same classes or upper-level classes and are recommended by their professors. Tutorials are free, and appointments are not needed. About 30% of students who are tutored are Dean’s List students.

Handouts: Students are welcome to take any of the study skills handouts available in The Forum in the Durham Center. Topics addressed include time management, note taking, textbook comprehension, test preparation, test taking, research papers, and proofreading.

Director: The Learning Resources Director, Lori Nielsen, works with students one-on-one to provide study tips for any class. She also helps students with writing assignments for any class. Students may make appointments to meet with Nielsen or they may just drop in when she’s available in her office.
