Jan. 12, 2006

The Dana College Menšs Basketball team headed to Omaha last night for their last non-conference contest of the season. Dana defeated Grace 86-61.

Dana College struggled in the first half against Grace. The Royals were not intimidated by the bigger Vikings and scrapped for every loose ball. Dana trailed early in the first half as they tried to find their shooting touch.

The Vikings shot only 30 percent from three-point land in the opening period. The Vikings were able to take a 44-25 lead as they went into the locker rooms at half.

Dana Head Coach Chris Fear made some adjustments in the second half and the Vikings came out and stretched their lead to 20 points midway through the period. Dana controlled the tempo of the game throughout the second half and did not allow many second attempts. Dana had the chance to rest most of its starters once the game was out of reach. The Viking bench outscored the Royals' bench 36-5.

The Vikings had three players in double digits and all but one on the squad scored. Dana was led once again by the dynamic duo of Mark Esser (SR, Woodbine, Iowa) and Jason Isaacson (SR, Council Bluffs, Iowa). Esser led the Vikings with 19 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and had two blocked shots. Isaacson scored 18, pulled down seven rebounds, added two blocks, and dished out six assists. Trent Mumma (SO, Bennington, Neb.) added a career-high 14 points. Mumma also pulled in five rebounds.

The win evens Dana's record at 10-10 overall and 4-4 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Grace drops to 1-5 on the year. The Vikings are off until Thursday when they host Hastings College (11-9, 2-6) at 7:30 p.m.
