An outside shooting attack
and high scoring by Dana’s seniors led the Viking men to a 78-76
victory over Hastings College Wednesday night in Blair.
The Dana men jumped out to a 28-13 lead over Hastings College in
Wednesday night’s basketball game in Blair. But Hastings worked back
to close the gap and at halftime Dana led 37-36.
The score was closer in the second half. Though Dana at one time
had a 9-point lead, Hastings tied up the score with just 4:44 to go
and then took the lead and held it for the next minute and a half.
Jason Isaacson (SR Council Bluffs, Iowa) sank a three to give
Dana the lead back. Tyler Mohr (SR Ocheyedan, Iowa) stole the ball
and passed to Isaacson who sank another three. The score was 76-71
with 1:33 on the clock. Mohr scored two free throws to give the
Vikings 78. Dana’s defense held off Hastings to get the win 78-76.
Dana made 13 three-point shots and all four seniors scored double
digits.
Isaacson scored 30 points in the game. He made 4 of 7
three-pointers. Rob Cox (SR Hawley, Minn.) was also 4-7 from the
arc. Cox scored 12 points. Mohr scored 11.
Mark Esser (SR Woodbine, Iowa) scored 14 points and eight
rebounds. Esser also had 3 blocked shots- two of them came on the
same play. A Hastings player went for the shot and Esser stuffed the
ball right back at him. The Hastings player grabbed the ball and
again went for the shot but Esser batted the ball away. Viking fans
roared.
“That may be the most three-point shots we’ve scored in the six
years that I’ve been here,” said coach Chris Fear. “And even though
we only out-rebounded them by two, in a close game that makes a big
difference.”
The game also reflects the competitiveness of the GPAC.
“The separation between GPAC teams is razor thin,” Fear said.
Dana is 5-4 in the GPAC and 11-10 overall. Hastings College, last
in the conference standings, drops to 2-8 in the GPAC and 11-11
overall.
Dana will travel to Sioux City, Iowa Saturday to play Morningside
College. Tip off is at 7:30pm.
