A shocking upset was within reach for the Dana College men’s
basketball team Wednesday night. The Vikings hosted GPAC No. 1 and
nation’s No. 13 University of Sioux Falls. The Viking faithful were
out in force to root on the hoopsters. But Dana’s lead slipped away
in the final seconds. USF won 64-60.

thunderous dunks to give Dana the lead in the first half. USF held
the Vikings leading scorer Jason Isaacson (SR, Council Bluffs, IA)
scoreless in the first ten minutes of the game, but Isaacson dished
out four assists and pulled down three boards. Teddy Cox (SR,
Hawley, MN) helped the Vikings keep their lead by pulling down five
rebounds. Dana’s pressure defense held the Cougars to 33% shooting
in the first half. At haltime the Vikings were up 28-24.
Dana opened the second half with a 13-9 run. USF became rattled
midway through the second stanza as Esser stole a lose ball and
rattled home his third dunk of the night. The Cougars then started
to find their mark as they pulled to within two points. Coach Chris
Fear called a time out to help regroup his squad.
The Vikings held the Cougars at bay until the 45-second mark.
Cougar Gerad Van Leur hit a three to tie the game up. A critical
turnover forced Dana to foul USF in the closing seconds. Reigning
conference player of the week Ryan Millsap hit 1 of 2 free throws
for USF and got his own rebound following the miss. The Cougars then
hit their next two free throws to take a three-point lead. Isaacson
was called for a traveling on his way to the basket to seal the USF
win.
Isaacson once again led the Vikings with 17 points and dished out
eight assists. Tyler Mohr (SR, Ocheyedan, IA) added 13 points. Esser
scored 12 points, eight rebounds, and blocked four shots. Teddy Cox
pulled down six rebounds on the evening.
