Vikings Fall to Mavericks

Omaha, Nebraska ~ The Dana College Men’s Basketball team traveled to Omaha on Friday evening to take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Dana has never defeated UNO in 12 previous meetings and Friday would be no different as the Vikings fell 94-60.

The Mavericks started out on an 11-0 run before the Vikings could get on the scoreboard.  Dana knocked the pregame jitters off and then pulled with in 12-10 as Gabe Bross (SO, Omaha, NE) hit a jumper in the lane with 12 minutes remaining in the half.  The Mavericks regrouped and finished the half on a 32-17 run.

Dana came out of the half-time locker room ready to play.  The Vikings had cut the Maverick lead to eight five minutes into the second stanza, on a Bross free throw.  This would be the closest Dana would come.  UNO then asserted its muscle and blew the Vikings away.  The final would see Dana suffer its worst loss this season 94-60.

Jared Kitzelman (SR, Fremont, NE) continued his hot shooting behind the three point arch.  Kitzelman was 3-6 from beyond the arch and led Dana with 15 points and six rebounds.  Gabe Bross added 11 points and six rebounds.  Jon Person (SO, Olathe, KS) chipped in ten points.  Zeb Christensen (SR, State Center, IA) scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds.  Freshmen AJ Arkfeld (Harlan, IA) and Sean Johnson (Council Bluffs, IA) led the team with three assists apiece.

The loss drops Dana College to 4-11 on the year.  The Vikings will play two home, conference match-ups to start the New Year.  Dana will host rival Midland Lutheran Tuesday night at 7”30pm.  The Friday Dakota Wesleyan will travel to Blair for a 6:00pm tip.
