Vikings Upend Broncos on the Road

January 17, 2007

Hastings, Nebraska ~ Wednesday night pitted two teams sitting in opposite positions in the conference standings.  Hastings College was receiving votes to be rated nationally and Dana College had not won back-to-back games all season.  By the end of the night, Dana would knock-off Hastings 71-60.

Things would look like it would be a close match up between the two teams early on.  Hastings would make a lay-up at 18:21 to put them up 4-2 and that would be their last lead of the game.  Teddy Cox (SR, Hawley, MN) would hit one of his six made three pointers to put the Vikings up 5-4.  Dana would not look back from there.  Dana would hit two more consecutive three-pointers to stretch the lead to 11-6.  The Vikings would then see their bench go on a 10-4 run midway through the first half.  The run was capped off by Sean Johnson (FR, Council Bluffs, IA) draining yet another Viking trey to give the Vikings an 11 point lead.  Zach Genant (SO, Springfield, SD) would hit a jumper late in the half to give Dana a 15 point lead heading into halftime.

The second half would see Dana put the game out of reach.   A Trent Mumma (JR, Bennington, NE) jumper five minutes into the second half would give the Vikings a 22 point lead.  Dana would reach its largest lead with nine minutes remaining in the game as Eric Maasen (SO, Hancock, IA) hit a jumper in the paint to put Dana up 23.  From their, the Vikings rested their starters to finished the game up 11.

“We played well defensively tonight,” commented Chris Fear.  “We didn’t play the perfect game, but our defense helped us in the win.”

Teddy Cox set his career high in scoring as he pumped in 30 points.  Cox was six of 11 from three point land and was four of four from the charity stripe.  Jared Kitzelman (SR, Fremont, NE) was the only other Viking in double digit points with ten.  Kitzelman also pulled down a team high four rebounds.  AJ Arkfeld (FR, Harlan, IA) dished out a team high four assists in 15 minutes worth of action.  Trent Mumma added eight points.  Point guard Doug Huston (SO, Olathe, KS) chipped in six points and three assists.

This was the first win at Hastings for Head Coach Chris Fear.  The win improves Dana to 6-14 on the year and 4-6 in conference play.  Hastings drops to 13-8 and 6-4.  Dana will host Morningside College on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm.  The reserve men’s team will play earlier in the afternoon at 12:00pm.
