Honolulu, Hawaii ~
The Dana College Men’s Basketball team is on one of
their longest road trips in recent memory. The Vikings are taking
part in the annual Hoop ‘N Surf Classic in Hawaii. Coach Chris
Fear’s team will play two games before preparing to return to the
mainland. Dana took on the State University of New York College at
Oneonta. The Vikings came away with a 60-57 win over the Red
Dragons.
No jet lag was evident in the first
half against Oneonta. Dana’s Trent Mumma (JR, Bennington, NE)
put Dana up early. Mumma scored the Vikings first five points with a
three pointer with an assist from Zeb Christensen (SR, State
Center, IA) and then hit a 15-foot jumper set up by Doug Huston
(SO, Olathe, KS). Dana made it tough for Oneonta to find its shooting
touch in the first half. Coach Fear had his team crashing the offensive
and defensive boards. The Vikings stretched their lead to 12 points
with five minutes to go in the opening period. Oneonta went on a
mini-run as the half ended to trail by six, 31-25.
The Red Dragons continued to apply
pressure to the Vikings as the second half opened. Oneonta held Dana
scoreless the first five minutes of the second half and took a three
point lead. The Vikings were not rattled and came roaring back to
regain the lead. Jared Kitzelman (SR, Fremont, NE) nailed a
three pointer to put Dana back on top. The two teams remained close the
remainder of the game. Neither team was to stretch a lead to more than
five points. Teddy Cox (SR, Hawley, MN) iced the game for Dana
by sinking two free throws with one second to go.
Trent Mumma
led the Vikings in scoring with 11 points. Dana’s two big men Gabe
Bross (SO, Omaha, NE) and Eric Maassen (SO, Hancock, IA) did
yeomen-like work in the blocks. The two combined for 16 points.
Maassen pulled down one rebound and had two steals before fouling out.
Bross pulled down five boards. Jared Kitzelman hit two crucial
three-pointers for Dana and finished with six points. Doug Huston
pulled down four rebounds, had four steals, and dished out three
assists to go with his six points.
The win raises Dana’s record to 4-9
on the season and drops Oneonta to 3-5. The Vikings will next take on
the Clan of Simon Fraser University tonight at 8:00pm (Hawaiian time).
Simon Fraser is a NAIA institution located in Burnaby, British
Columbia. The Clan is currently 11-5 on the season. Dana will return
to Nebraska on Thursday afternoon. Following Christmas, the Vikings
will travel into Omaha and take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha in
Sapp Field house at 7:00pm. Dana will square off against Midland
Lutheran at Home on January 2, 2007 at 7:30pm.
