Vikings Spend Thanksgiving in South Dakota

For the second time this month, the Dana men’s basketball team spent a weekend in South Dakota.  Dana traveled to Rapid City, S.D., to take part in the South Dakota Tech/US Bank Tournament.  Dana took on Black Hills State on Friday and then the host school, SD Tech, on Saturday.  The Vikings came away with an 82-77 win over BHSU.  On Saturday the host school turned the tables and Dana fell, 80-70.

In the first game the Vikings staked out a 45-29 lead in the first half.  BHSU did not go away without a fight and outscored the Vikings 48-77 in the second.

Dana had four players score 60 of the 82 points.  Eric Maassen (JR, Hancock, Iowa) continued his strong play in the first half of the season.  Maassen scored a team-high 17 points and added six rebounds and three assists.  Trent Mumma (SR, Bennington, Neb.) equaled Maassen with 17 points and had a game-high eight rebounds.  Trent Albers (SR, Davenport, Neb.) kept his exceptional play going by scoring 15 points off the bench.  Zach Genant (JR, Springfield, S.D.) chipped in 11 points, including three three-pointers.  Doug Huston (JR, Olathe, Kan.) had five assists and two steals.  Sean Johnson (SO, Council Bluffs, Iowa) dished out four assists and grabbed five rebounds.

Dana raced out to a 35-31 lead against South Dakota Tech, but could not finish the game out.  The Hard Rockers came away with an 80-70 win over the Dana.  The Vikings once again had four players in double digits. Huston had a team-high 15 points, including an eight for eight performance from the free throw line.  AJ Arkfeld (SO, Harlan, Iowa) and Genant each added 11 points off the bench for the Vikings. Maassen chipped in ten points and five rebounds. Johnson once again led the Vikings with four assists on the night.

Dana is 5-5 on the season and 0-1 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.  Dana will travel to Lincoln on Tuesday to square off against Nebraska Wesleyan University (4-1, 0-1).  Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.  KDCV is planning on airing both the men’s and women’s games Tuesday night.  The Vikings will return home on Dec. 5 to take on Hastings College who is receiving national rating votes.
