Dana Upsets Hastings on the Road
For only the second time in over 50 years, Dana College men’s basketball
defeated Hastings College in men’s basketball in Hastings. Dana pulled
off the feat for the first time last season and repeated the task
Wednesday evening. The Vikings defeated the Broncos, 61-56.
Despite being out rebounded 41-28, Dana was able to keep Hastings at
bay. AJ Arkfeld (SO, Harlan, Iowa) led the Vikings with 13
points off the bench. Arkfeld was five for five from the free throw
line and sank to critical charity shots in the closing seconds of the
game. Sean Johnson (SO, Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Eric
Maassen (JR, Hancock, Iowa) added 12 points each.
The most telling stat was from the free throw line. Dana shot over 86
percent (19 of 22) from the charity stripe, compared to 64 percent for
Hastings (9 of 14). The Vikings defense forced Hastings into 20
turnovers, compared to the Vikings’ 14.
Dana improves to 13-15 on the season and 6-10 in Great Plains Athletic
Conference play. Hastings falls to 18-10 and 8-8 in conference. Things
do not get easier for the Vikings. Dana hosts the nation’s top rated
team, Morningside College, on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. This will be
the last regular season home game for the Vikings.
