Vikings Fall to Undefeated Mustangs
Dana College Head Coach Chris Fear knew that Great Plains Athletic
Conference would be tough this season, but not this tough. The Dana men
squared off in Sioux City, Iowa, against the NAIA second-rated Mustangs
of Morningside. This is the second straight top ten team Dana faced.
The Vikings could not overcome cold shooting in the second half as they
fell, 82-57.
The Vikings came out ready to give the undefeated Mustangs a run for
their money. Early on, Dana had Morningside on the ropes. Doug
Huston (JR, Olathe, Kan.) buried a three-pointer to put Dana up 7-2
in the opening minutes. This would be the largest lead Dana would hold.
Trent Mumma (SR, Bennington, Neb.) gave Dana its last lead as he
hit a jumper with 14:07 remaining in the first half. The Vikings went
into the halftime locker room trailing by nine, 44-35.
Dana did not score until four minutes into the second half. It was too
late by that time as the Mustangs had upped their lead to 15 points.
Dana tried to come back as Zach Genant (JR, Springfield, S.D.)
hit three straight free throws. Eric Maassen (JR, Hancock, Iowa)
nailed a jumper in the paint to cut the lead to nine points. Then ice
cold shooting ensued for Dana. The Vikings could not buy a bucket and
saw the Mustangs hit field goal after field goal to increase their lead
to 25 at the end of the game.
Mumma led the Vikings with 12 points on six of nine shooting.
Maassen added 11 points and three rebounds. Huston chipped in
ten points and three boards. Nate Thies (SR, Norfolk, Neb.)
pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Sean Johnson (SO, Council
Bluffs, Iowa) dished out five assists.
Dana is now 6-8 (0-5 GPAC) on the season, while Morningside improves to
11-0 (4-0 GPAC).
Things will not get easier for the Vikings as Dordt College comes to
town on Dec. 15. The Defenders are 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference
play. Tip-off is set for 4:00pm.
