31.105 Musicianship I 4 credits
A study of basic scale and chord structures and progressions with practical
written exercises. Ear training through singing, melodic and rhythmic
dictation will be supplemented by learning how to listen critically to major
works of western music. Keyboard skills will be taught through applied
lessons. Course includes aural skills lab.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of music theory placement
test.

Designed to provide the elementary teacher with the fundamentals of music theory,

Designed to provide knowledge and skill in the art and craft of conducting.
Prerequisite: 31.215 Musicianship III or permission of instructor.
31.204 Latin, English & French Diction
and Vocal Literature 1 credit
A presentation of rules and exercises in pronunciation of Latin, English
and French for singers. Includes a study of vocal literature in these languages.
31.206 Italian & German Diction
and Vocal Literature 1 credit
A presentation of rules and exercises in pronunciation of Italian and German
for singers. Includes a study of vocal literature in these languages.
31.209 Music Appreciation 3 credits
A course for non-music majors. No technical competence in music is required.
Includes elements of music, musicals, jazz, program music, nationalism, absolute
music, short lyric forms, opera, symphony, world music and twentieth-century
music.

31.216 Musicianship IV 4 credits
A culmination of the Musicianship sequence, exploring large forms, analysis
in large contexts and composition and instrumentation techniques. Students
continue to develop ear training and sight-singing skills. Course includes
aural skills lab.
Prerequisite: 31.215 Musicianship III or successful completion of
music theory placement test.
31.270A Jazz Appreciation 3 credits
Open to all students with an interest in jazz. Designed to create a better
understanding and appreciation of jazz through exposure to many famous
performers and a wide variety of styles that are significant in its development.
In order to understand the importance of improvisation and spontaneity
in jazz, regular excursions to live jazz concerts and jazz clubs will
be taken.
31.271 History of Rock and Roll 3 credits
Open to all students, regardless of musical background. A study of the
musical styles, elements, cultural and social perspectives and historical
developments of rock music. Emphasis will be placed on the improvement
of listening skills and exposure to musical styles and their time frames,
contributions of key individuals, and historical and sociological events
that shaped the formation of rock and roll music. Styles discussed will
be blues, rhythm and blues, rockabilly, rock 'n' roll, country and western
and many of the different rock styles of the 1960s. Students are required
to write two short, formal research papers.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of baseline competency
in writing.
31.303 History of Music I 3 credits
A study of the evolution of music in western European society from antiquity
to the Baroque Era. Musical styles, forms, and genres are studied by reading
textbooks, resource materials and journals, classroom discussion, listening
to musical examples in and out of class while following the correlating
music scores, and various writing projects.
Prerequisite: Junior standing.
31.304 History of Music II 3 credits
A study of the evolution of music in western European society from the
Baroque Era to the current day. Music styles, forms, and genres are studied
by reading textbooks, resource materials, and journals, classroom discussion,
listening to musical examples in and out of class while following the
correlating music scores, and various writing projects.
Prerequisite: Junior standing.
31.311 World Music 3 credits
An exploration of traditional music from significant non-western cultures of
the contemporary world, among them Africa, India and Indonesia. The
historical, cultural and performance contexts will be surveyed through
listening and reading, watching and writing.
Prerequisite: Junior standing.
31.313A Methods of Teaching Music in Elementary
Schools 3 credits
Designed to provide knowledge of psychology, theory and practice of music
education in the elementary schools. Emphasis is placed upon the nature,
organization and maintenance of the elementary music program.
Prerequisite: Major in music.
31.399 Special Topics 1-3 credits
A selected area of study in music. The topic is announced in the appropriate
semester's course schedule.
Prerequisite: Generally, sophomore standing or permission
of instructor. Offered as needed.
Applied Music 1-2 credits
Individual and/or group instruction in the form of a one-half hour or an hour
lesson a week. 100-400 level in the following applied areas: voice,
piano, organ, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, euphonium, flute, oboe, clarinet,
saxophone, bassoon, percussion, strings, guitar.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
31.408A Methods of Teaching Vocal/Choral Music 3

Designed to provide music students the opportunity to do work in a specialized

Special study under the supervision of the instructor in areas such as;
piano pedagogy, vocal literature and diction, music history and literature.

31.480 Chamber Music
Chamber Music ensembles give two or more students the opportunity to
perform varied chamber music literature with faculty coaching.
31.491 Santa Lucia
An unauditioned women's choral ensemble that sings a cappella, in Danish
and English. Their pinnacle performance is the Scandinavian Santa Lucia
Ceremony during the Christmas season, on-campus at Sights and Sounds of Christmas,
and at various regional Christmas festivals.
31.493 Dana College Concert Band
The Dana College Concert Band is the principal instrumental ensemble
of Dana College. The Concert Band presents concerts both on and off-campus
including regular tours to various parts of the country.
31.494 Dana College VOICES
VOICES is an unauditioned choral ensemble open to all Dana College students
as well as Dana faculty and staff and Blair community members. The ensemble
explores American music of all types as well as the music of other cultures,
both Western and non-Western, through performance and multicultural events
on campus.
31.495 Dana College Chorale
Dana College Chorale is an auditioned mixed ensemble that explores quality
choral literature while specializing in sacred choral music. The ensemble
performs extensively and has toured in Europe, the Orient and throughout North
America. A two semester commitment is required.
31.497 Dana College Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble is a performing ensemble designed to study a wide variety
of jazz styles including swing, progressive, modern and rock.
