DANA FRESHMAN HEADS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FUNDRAISING EFFORT, MARCH 23

Megan Lazoritz revived a harpist extravaganza to help raise money

A group of 25 harpists will put on a benefit concert in honor of a Children’s Hospital patient, who succumbed to cancer last summer. The concert will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, at the Strauss Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Nebraska-Omaha.

This will be the second year for the concert, an idea that was revived by Megan Lazoritz, then a Millard West student and now a freshman at Dana College in Blair, Neb. Lazoritz first heard of the idea — once a tradition in Omaha — from Omaha Symphony harpist Mary Bircher.

“I thought it was a great idea,” Lazoritz said. “It sounded like something I wanted to do.” As a social work major at Dana, Lazoritz has spent time at the hospital learning about and participating in music therapy.

“Megan is the kind of talented young lady that Dana seeks to attract and support,” said Dana College President Myrvin Christopherson. “She not only has talent, but she builds on it and shares it with the larger community. We are very proud of her."

Last year’s concert was smaller, with fewer harpists and a smaller venue at Millard West. With more harpists of all ages participating and the move to UNO, Lazoritz said she is hoping this year’s event will bring in more funds for Children’s Hospital.

The concert’s theme is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” in honor of the patient, who was known to spontaneously break out into the song while being treated at the hospital. The harpists will be performing their own special arrangement of the song at the concert. All proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital in the patient’s name.

“This little boy really stood out,” Lazoritz said. “He was always so happy and cheerful, even while in the hospital.”

Other selections performed by the harpists will be a special Broadway arrangement of “New York, New York,” “My Favorite Things,” “Greensleeves,” and many others.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children and are available for purchase at the door. Volunteers from Dana’s Social Awareness Organization will sell tickets and serve as ushers.
