Former
senator's brother Arthur Simon to be featured speaker
Dana College
will hold a special memorial service for Sen. Paul Simon, a Dana
alumnus who died Dec. 9 in Illinois. The service will be at
7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12 in Trinity Chapel on Dana’s
campus in Blair, Neb. The service is open to the public.
The Rev.
Dr. Arthur Simon, Sen. Simon’s brother and a 1952
graduate of Dana College, will be the featured speaker. Arthur
Simon is the
retired founder and executive director of Bread for the World,
a major international hunger advocacy and research group based
in Washington,
D.C.
While at Dana, Arthur Simon was active in the choir, intramural
sports, student government, the student newspaper, the yearbook
and campus
Lutheran organizations. He shared his brother’s zeal for
serving mankind. From Dana, where he was honored as a distinguished
alumnus
in 1980, he went on to graduate from Concordia Seminary in St.
Louis, Mo. Unafraid to take on a challenge, he was the pastor of
Trinity Lutheran
Church in New York City’s Lower East Side (a heavily-populated,
low-income area) from 1961–72. He has authored books on Christian
faith and public policy, poverty and hunger. In 2001, he received
a Leadership Award from the Center for Public Justice, an organization
where he also has served as a trustee and advisor. Among Arthur
Simon’s
numerous awards and honorary degrees is the Presidential Hunger
Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Arthur Simon and his wife, Carol,
are retired and live in Brentwood, Md.
