Students prepare taxes for low- to middle-income families

Several Dana College students are putting their education to good use this tax season by preparing income tax forms for their fellow students and low-to-middle income individuals free of charge through e-filing the returns.

All of the students enrolled in last fall’s Federal Tax class took the volunteer tax preparer course provided by AARP and passed the preparer’s exam. Four students continued with the tax program in January. An AARP volunteer took them through the Tax-Wise computer-based program for e-filing 2004 tax returns.

Three of the students — Jennifer Muell of Walnut, Iowa; Clinton Peterson of Oakland, Neb.; and Joe Stump of Grand Island, Neb. — have been preparing taxes for others since the last week of January under the supervision of Dr. Susan Udey, associate professor of business.

This volunteer service is open to Dana students and low-to-middle income individuals. The students can prepare federal tax returns, as well as Iowa and Nebraska state tax returns. Some of the volunteers have even ventured into other state returns.

“ I’m very proud of these students and their professor, Dr. Udey, for offering their special expertise to help people in need,” said Dr. Myrvin Christopherson, Dana College president. “What they do is exactly what makes me burst with pride at being a part of the Dana College community.”
