Former Merced College assistant coach looking to build dynasty

Dana College is proud to announce it has hired Bruce Atkinson to take over the Viking Volleyball program. Atkinson is coming to Dana from Merced College in California, where he has served as the assistant women’s volleyball coach since 1999.

During his time at Merced, the volleyball team never finished lower than fourth in the Central Valley Conference of the Community College League of California. The conference and league are known for producing solid student athletes — especially in volleyball — who go on to great careers at four-year institutions.

“I’m extremely excited to have Coach Atkinsdirect our volleyball team,” said Jim Krueger, director of athletics. “To have a coach of his experience join our program will make a great addition to the athletic department and keep us competitive in the perennially tough Great Plains Athletic Conference.”

Atkinson had previously coached at the high school level and competed for Brigham Young University-Hawaii’s men’s club volleyball team and in California Beach Volleyball Association tournaments.
Atkinson said he chose to come to Dana because of the college’s commitment to building an exceptional team that will develop into a legacy.

“ Our first goal is to make the playoffs,” he said. “And that’s a very attainable goal. Our main goal is to have a team that when you go into any other team’s gym, you automatically earn a few points through the awe of your reputation.”

Atkinson, who is also a practicing chiropractor, will also teach anatomy and kinesiology classes at Dana. The opportunity to teach in a personal environement, especially in the health sciences field, is yet another reason he cited in his decision to join Dana’s community.

Dana College is a place where all students actively participate. They make things happen — in their own lives and in the lives of others. Through a highly supportive faculty and campus community, Dana students develop interpersonal skills, leadership abilities, and other important values and knowledge as they make choices about their future.
