“I’m extremely excited to have Coach
Atkinsdirect our volleyball team,” said Jim Krueger,
director of athletics. “To have a coach of his experience
join our program will make a great addition to the athletic
department and keep us competitive in the perennially tough
Great Plains Athletic Conference.”
Atkinson had previously coached at the high school level and
competed for Brigham Young University-Hawaii’s men’s
club volleyball team and in California Beach Volleyball Association
tournaments.
Atkinson said he chose to come to Dana because of the college’s commitment
to building an exceptional team that will develop into a legacy.
“ Our first goal is to make the playoffs,” he
said. “And that’s a very attainable goal. Our main
goal is to have a team that when you go into any other team’s
gym, you automatically earn a few points through the awe of
your reputation.”
Atkinson, who is also a practicing chiropractor, will also
teach anatomy and kinesiology classes at Dana. The opportunity
to teach in a personal environement, especially in the health
sciences field, is yet another reason he cited in his decision
to join Dana’s community.
