Shakespeare's
comedy explores hypocrisy in justice
For the final show of the Dana
College Theater season, Dr. Paul Schneider, professor of English
and director of theater, has selected Shakespeare’s
intriguing problem play, “Measure for Measure.” Performances
are in Lauritzen Theatre, Madsen Fine Arts Center and will be at
7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, April 30, with
a Sunday
performance on May 1 at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and the public
is warmly invited to attend.
In this disturbing comedy, Shakespeare
looks at the morally ambiguous behavior of a strict puritan — Angelo
(Eric Grant-Leanna) — who
has begun to lust for the sister of the man he has condemned to
death for what amounts to lustful behavior. Complicating the problem
is
the Duke of Vienna (Nick Albrecht), who has put Angelo in charge
of cleaning
up the immoral behavior of his city, a behavior to which he has
turned a blind eye for more than a decade. As Angelo enforces the
strict
laws of the city, the Duke sneaks around disguised as a friar,
living up
to the label given him by one wag in the play, “The Duke
of Dark Corners.”
In this play from the period of Shakespeare’s
great tragedies, the author exposes the flaws of those who are
empowered to enforce
justice on the population.
This show is not suitable for children
under 13.
