Dr. Myrvin Christopherson

New All-Academic Award in tribute to President's 19 years of service

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is proud to announce the formation of the Christopherson All-Academic Award.

The award will be a traveling trophy to be presented annually to the GPAC institution with the best academic performance by its student-athletes in all sports.

The details of the award are being finalized by the conference, with the first award scheduled to be presented following the 2005-2006 academic year.

The Christopherson All-Academic Award is named in honor of Dana College President Dr. Myrvin Christopherson’s faithful and long-term service to student-athletes in the GPAC.  Dr. Christopherson will be retiring at the end of this academic year after 19 years of dedicated leadership at Dana College in Blair, Neb. He will be honored Saturday, April 30, at Dana, during a special invitation-only celebration of his tenure.

“ President Christopherson’s leadership and guidance of the GPAC has made a positive impact on where we are today,” said GPAC Commissioner, Corey Westra.  “Naming this award in his honor is a testament to his years of service and we wish him well in his retirement from higher education.”

President Christopherson served as the first chair of the GPAC Council of Presidents, which was formed in 2004. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Christopherson was a Viking student athlete himself, playing for the men’s basketball and baseball teams.

The GPAC has also approved granting Dr. Christoperson free life-time admission to all conference events.  Retiring Doane College President, Fred Brown, and retiring Nebraska Wesleyan Faculty Athletics Representative, Stu Spero, have also been granted free life-time admission to all GPAC events.
