Dana College Band to Present Spring Concert May 11
The Dana College Concert Band, directed by Dr. William
Hall, will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday,
May 11, in the Lauritzen Theatre. The public is cordially invited
to the free program, which will feature a varied selection of music.
Among the major works the band will perform are Clifton Williams’ four-movement
Symphonic Suite, which received the American Bandmasters Association’s
Ostwald Composition Award, and the multi-movement work Liturgical Music
for Band, composed by Martin Mailman in 1967.
Shorter works will include Overture for Winds by Charles Carter; Golliwog’s
Cakewalk, a delightful character piece written by Claude Debussy in 1908; Felix
Mendelssohn’s Pilgrim’s March, taken from his fourth symphony; and
Sigurd Karg-Elert’s Marche Triomphale, originally composed for the large
French cathedral organ.
The concert also will feature a trumpet solo by Kori Williamsen, a senior music
education major from Blair. She will perform Alan Hovhaness’ Prayer
of Saint Gregory, a composition depicting the vision the led St. Gregory the Illuminator
to found the first national Christian church. Williamsen also will conduct the
band in a performance of Mozart’s Alleluia.
In addition to the Concert Band, Williamsen has performed in the Dana Jazz
Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Chorale and VOICES and has appeared in several theater
productions.
