Hundreds of prospective college students will descend on the campuses
of the state's private colleges as part of Nebraska Independent College
Week. Earlier this year, Gov. Dave Heineman officially proclaimed
July 31-August 4, 2006 as Nebraska Independent College Week and urged
all high school students and their parents to personally visit the
participating institutions this week to discover for themselves the
quality of educational opportunities offered and the affordability
of attending an independent college in Nebraska.
Dana College is among
the private colleges and universities offering special visit days.
The other members of the Nebraska Independent
College Foundation (NICF) are Bellevue University (Bellevue), College
of Saint Mary (Omaha), Concordia University (Seward), Doane College
(Crete), Grace University (Omaha), Hastings College (Hastings),
Midland Lutheran College (Fremont), Nebraska Wesleyan University
(Lincoln),
Union College (Lincoln) and York College (York).
During Nebraska
Independent College Week, students are encouraged to visit as many
campuses as possible. Two orientation sessions
will be held daily during the week on all 11 campuses—one
at 9:00 a.m. and a second at 1:30 p.m. At the campus visits,
students will
learn about the institutions' varied academic, athletic and organizational
offerings. Campus tours and financial aid sessions will be available
at all institutions.
All of the NICF member institutions provide
generous scholarships and financial aid opportunities for high
school students. Their
programs are characterized by close student-faculty relationships
and mentoring,
high four-year graduation rates, and opportunities for students
to become involved in a wide variety of co-curricular offerings.
