DANA FALL ARTS SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
“Seussical” and
Garrison Keillor highlight this semester
Dana College is proud of its tradition of active learning. At Dana,
students don't learn to appreciate the arts by just studying textbooks
but by performing. This fall brings an arts schedule full of exciting
and highly regarded student performances.
Theater
The Dana College Theater will be one of the first in Nebraska to
produce the Broadway hit "Seussical: The Musical."
"Seussical" is a contemporary re-imagining of Dr. Seuss,
which weaves together many of his most famous stories and characters
in unexpected ways. The musical creates the witty, wild and whimsical
world of Dr. Seuss as it has never been seen before. When chaos
erupts in the Jungle of Nool, it will take The Cat in the Hat, Horton
the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz and a gaggle of characters to bring
harmony back to their world. The score includes pop, gospel, blues
and R & B.
Paul Schneider, professor of English and director of theater, said
the production should appeal to all ages, and is a great way to
introduce pre-school children to theater at a reasonable price.
Bright colors in the scenery and imaginative costumes will help
keep young audience members enthralled in the story.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8–9 and Oct. 15–16,
with additional matinee performances on Sunday, Oct. 10 and Sunday,
Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Lauritzen Theatre in the Madsen Fine Arts
Center. Tickets are $5.
Chorale
The Dana College Chorale, one of the region's most esteemed vocal
groups, will perform at a very special event in Omaha on Oct. 24.
The Chorale will open for National Public Radio staple Garrison
Keillor on Oct. 24 at the Qwest Center. Keillor, best known for
his show "Prairie Home Companion," is doing the show as
a benefit for Lutheran Outdoor Ministries of Nebraska and Iowa.
The event will be an exciting opportunity for the Chorale to expand
its fanbase in the area. Tickets are available at Lutheran churches
and online at www.keillorevent.com
for a suggested donation of $25. Seating at the event is open.
Another inclusive event is the traditional choir reunion on Oct.
2 during Dana Homecoming. Chorale Director Richard Palmer said,
"The annual Homecoming choir reunion allows the singers of
today to sing for the singers of yesterday." After the performance,
all the reunion participants join together to sing Dana favorites.
Senior music student Kori Williamsen will offer a recital at 11
a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24 and again at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.
25.
Concert Band
The major event for the Dana Concert Band this fall will be their
free concert at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the Lauritzen Theatre in the
Madsen Fine Arts Center.
Arlington (Neb.) High School Band Director Shana Ryan will be the
featured soloist on Kent Kennan's "Night Soliloqy for Flute."
Dana College Concert Band Conductor William Hall called this piece
one of the major flute works of the 20th century. The Band will
also feature their percussion section on Clifton William's "Concertina
for Percussion and Band." Other selections in the concert include
the overture to the opera "The Marriage Contract" by Gioacchino
Rossini, "October" by Eric Whitare and "Variations
on a Korean Folk Song" by John Barnes Chance.
Sights & Sounds
The annual Sights and Sounds of Christmas celebration at Dana College
will be Saturday, December 4, and Sunday, December 5.
Dana College has ushered in the holiday season with this Christmas
festival for decades. Placing emphasis on the holiday traditions
of Scandinavia, several musical ensembles, including performances
by the Dana College Concert Band and Chorale, and our authentic
Scandinavian smorgasbord.
The annual Sounds of Christmas concert has become so popular that
we have added a Saturday evening performance by the Dana College
Chorale and Concert Band in the Gardner-Hawks Center at 4 p.m. After
the concert, join us for the "tastes of Christmas" at
our authentic Scandinavian smorgasbord at 5:30 p.m.
A full slate of events begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday and continues
until 7 p.m. The smorgasbord is served continuously during each
hour from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and again at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.
