DOUG BARGMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WEEKEND CRASH

Dana grad and Beef receiver faces possible paralysis

Former Dana College football standout and current Omaha Beef player Doug Bargman was injured in a car accident Saturday night in Lincoln.

Local law enforcement records state that Bargman was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Jon Erbst of Lincoln. The vehicle was southbound on 14th Street, approximately a half-mile south of Mill Road when the it drifted into the northbound lane and eventually exited the east side of the roadway. The vehicle entered the ditch and continued southbound until it struck a metal post with the rear passenger quarter. The vehicle then continued down a creek bottom and struck the embankment coming to rest on its side. The creek bottom measured 25.7 feet deep from the road surface. No other vehicles were involved in the 1:30 am crash. Both occupants were transported to Bryan LGH Medical Center in Lincoln where Bargman is currently listed in critical condition.

Bargman sustained a fracture to his T-12 vertebrae and was treated for hypothermia from lying in the creek’s water. His injury usually results in permanent paralysis of the legs.

Adam Petersen, friend and foremer Dana teammate of Bargman, was present with the family Sunday when doctors told them there is a possibility that Bargman may never walk again. Petersen said, “Doug was in good spirits. He told us he is confident he will walk again. All he could talk about was being able to play for the Beef again. Doug is the kind of person that can overcome any odds to walk again.”

Bargman played wide reciever for Dana College. In 2003 ,the team captain was first in all-purpose yards in the Great Plains Athletic Conference which earned him 1st team All Conference honors. He was named the Omaha World-Herald’s Offensive Small College Player of the Year in 2003. Bargman also holds Dana’s school record for most receptions in a game.

Head Coach Bill Danenhauer said, “What stands out most in my mind about Doug is his smile. He was always smiling no matter what happened.”
