KIDS ON THE HILL OFFERS FREE FUN
FOR AREA YOUTH, SEPT. 21
Annual Dana College event
combines athletics and academics
Every year, Dana College in Blair, Neb., opens up
for a full day of family fun for area youth. The annual Kids on
the Hill Day combines free athletic and academic sessions to give
kids in grades 1–8 a taste of the higher learning experience.
Coaches and players from the Viking football, volleyball,
soccer and basketball teams will be on hand to conduct skill clinics.
Kids will also have the chance to have some fun in Dana's indoor
pool.
Children don't have to be superstars in a particular
sport to join the clinics. All ages and skill levels are welcome,
especially by Dana's student athletes, said Kristen Gay, head women's
soccer coach and sports information director.
"At Dana we strive to cultivate a player's character
as much as his or her playing ability," Gay said. "Part
of that is learning how to be a role model in his or her community."
Kids on the Hill is always a great chance for Dana's
student athletes to share their love of the sport with the collegiate
student athletes of the future, Gay said.
"Kids on the Hill is a chance for the community
to meet the new coaches and our fall teams," she said. "It's
also a chance for athletes to give back to the community that has
supported us over the years."
Another highlight of Kids on the Hill is Dr. Therese Michels' "Chemistry
is a Blast" presentation. As the title implies, lots of flashy
fun is involved with a bit of learning mixed in.
Campus tours will also be available, and a free lunch
for the kids will be served at noon with special interactive entertainment
planned.
Kids on the Hill leads up to the Dana-Nebraska Wesleyan football
game at 1 p.m. on Viking Field. All participants get into the game
free. Kids will also have one last chance to compete with the traditional
Frisbee toss during halftime.
Registration for Kids on the Hill starts at 8 a.m.
in Borup Coliseum. The entire day is free for all. For more information
about the event, contact Sarah Cavanah, Dana College communications
coordinator, at (402) 426-7216 or scavanah@fs1.dana.edu.
